Back in November we told you about Earthrace - the distinctive trimaran powerboat - joining the Sea Shepherd organisation as a so-called "stealthed support vessel" named the Ady Gil. Unfortunately we've some bad news: the $2.5m carbon-fibre and Kevlar boat was seemingly involved in a collision with a Japanese whaling vessel and subsequently sunk, as efforts to tow the Ady Gil to harbour were scuppered as the damaged craft took on water and snapped its lines. We first wrote about Earthrace, the gorgeous carbon-fibre and Kevlar trimaran which is planning on smashing the current world record for circumnavigating the globe in a powerboat, back in August. Now the lucky minxes over at Luxist have had a chance to tour the interior. I say "tour", but it's a pretty quick one since the accomodation is quite like burying yourself alive (only you have to pay $5 a pop, since they're still raising money for the record attempt). It goes without saying that carbon fibre was initially designed for Civic owning louts to tart up their knobs with (gearknobs, that is), but some people can't leave things alone and will insist on bastardising them for other purposes. Hence this rather impressive trimaran. Called Earthrace, the carbon/Kevlar hull is designed to slice into, rather than over, waves, using the 1080 horsepower biofuel engine to scare passengers and passing dolphins as it goes.
