Dell tablet focus is Windows 8 not Android

Dell is betting on Windows 8 as the company's best chance of tablet success against the iPad, with CEO Michael Dell arguing that the Android slate market "has not developed" as predicted. Speaking at Dell World 2011 this week, V3 reports, Dell described the PC manufacturer as "very aligned with Microsoft around Windows 8" and teased that "you'll hear more about Windows 8 from us and see a wide range of products released."

Microsoft is tipped to present a number of new tablet PCs during CEO Steve Ballmer's CES 2011 keynote, with brands including Samsung and Dell expected to provide hardware running the Windows OS. According to the New York Times sources, one of the devices is a Samsung slate that's "similar in size and shape to the Apple iPad, although it is not as thin. More gist for the Dell Tablet PC rumour-mill; D420-based convertible coming in October?

More gist for the Dell Tablet PC rumour-mill; D420-based convertible coming in October?

Last October I wrote about the (perpetual) rumour that hardware behemoth Dell were planning a Tablet PC come Vista SP1; back then it was based on a blabbermouth Dell rep at a school conference, now a mysterious jkontherun reader has approached James with some information of their own.

Apparently in the September/October 2007 timeframe (later than the previous rumour, which indicated the end of Spring) we can expect to see a convertible Tablet based on the Latitude D420 notebook design and thus compatible with all existing D420 accessories.  It seems to be positioned as the final swan-song for the range, since the rumour goes that it will be the last model in the D series.

Dell Venue 10 7000 tablet convertible now in the US

Dell Venue 10 7000 tablet convertible now in the US

Dell made a rather surprising move early this month when it unveiled the Venue 10 7000. Although in name it takes after the Venue 8 in the same 7000 series, the tablet looks more like a descendant of Lenovo's Yoga line. At the same time, however, it takes some cues from a Microsoft Surface, changing from an Android tablet at one moment into an Android laptop the next, thanks to an optional keyboard dock that gives the Venue 10 7000 its flexibility, both in form and in purpose.

Dell’s 6mm thick camera-loaded tablet is IDF’s secret star

Dell’s 6mm thick camera-loaded tablet is IDF’s secret star

Intel’s IDF wasn’t where we expected to find an incredible Android tablet, but Dell quietly knocked it out the park with the Venue 8 7000, a brand new slate using RealSense depth-sensing camera technology. An 8.4-inch alternative to the iPad mini with Retina display and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4, the Dell tablet has a surprise on both sides: a fantastic 2560 x 1600 OLED touchscreen on the front, and a trio of cameras on the back.
