Don’t Do It Dell: Think Tablets, Not MIDs

It looks like Dell is planning to release a mobile internet device, or a MID. The details are few and far between but the product—code-named Streak—looks like it packs Wi-Fi, 3G and Android 2.0 all into one. It is exactly what Intel has been calling a mobile internet device for the past few years: larger than a smartphone, primarily for accessing the Net, and featuring multimedia and even GPS functionality. The Archos 5 Internet Tablet and the leaked video of the Dell device gives us a better glimpse of what is to come and what it can do. Ironically (and you will see why later), when I watched the video I immediately thought: ah, so Dell wants to make an iPhone with a larger 5-inch screen!

Dell long ago determined that the way to get consumers to buy laptops was to offer them lots of options for not only the hardware inside the computers, but the colors on the outside. Out of that was born the Dell Design Studio where you can choose custom colors and artwork to sit on the top of your notebook. While Dell only teased that sexy Adamo XPS machine today, it spent much more time showing off the new colors for its notebooks based on nail polish colors from OPI.

DROID beats iPhone 3GS in TIME Top 2009 Gadgets list

In a move almost guaranteed to provoke controversy, TIME have announced their "Top 10 Everything of 2009" list and the Motorola DROID pips the iPhone 3GS to the post for the number one spot in the gadgets category.  In fact, Apple's latest smartphone slots into fourth position, trailing the Barnes & Noble nook in second place, and - somewhat bizarrely, for all that we appreciate the engineering involved - Dyson's Air Multiplier fan in third place.
