NASA tests metal ballista, space harpoon for Comet Nucleus mission

, Dec 16th 2011 Discuss [5]

This week the coolest team of space explorers on the planet at NASA have announced their next raging action and adventure television episode called "Space Harpoons!" - or that's what you might think if you'd not read too deeply into their press release which details not only "The Comet Nucleus Sample Return Mission," but both the fantastically powerful metal ballista and space harpoon they're currently testing out for it. Scientists at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. are currently in early stages of testing a harpoon of epic proportions, able to collect samples of materials from the surface layers of a comet. What they're currently testing out is how hard their six foot tall crossbow will have to fire a harpoon with its 1/2 inch thick bow string to blast through enough layers of rock on the surface of the space bodies it intends to study. I know the hazards of melee combat with a hoard of ravenous zombies is significant so when the invasion comes, you want a ranged weapon. You also want a weapon that is quiet so all the other zombies don’t come running. Windows Mobile 6 announced

, Feb 8th 2007 Discuss [0]

In a move that has surprised schedule-lovers everywhere, Microsoft has prematurely lifted the embargo on Windows Mobile 6 and announced the mobile OS upgrade prior to its scheduled launch at 3GSM on Monday.  We've covered this Smartphone refresh before, under its codename 'Crossbow', but now we get to hear from testers who have been using it for the past month or so as to whether it's a decent update (and, of course, whether it will hold up against the iPhone). Available in three varieties, Classic, Standard and Professional (covering non-phone PDAs, non-touchscreen smartphones and touchscreen smartphones respectively), from initial reports it seem Microsoft has concentrated on making the user experience as clean as possible.  Seems like a sensible move; the OS has traditionally been praised with one hand for its power and functionality, but simultaneously spanked with the other for being a relative pain in the bottom to use.  Mail, Contacts & Phone and Live Messenger have all been vastly improved.  Check out pocketnow.com's video of the OS in action after the cut, together with more screenshots and links to some first impressions.
