Cowon D2 covers all your mobile media bases

Cowon D2 covers all your mobile media bases

Not for the first time I find myself wishing I lived in Korea - because they get some of the coolest gadgets around.  This, my beauties, is Cowon's latest video-capable DAP, the D2.  Only to label it that is to do it a disservice; hidden behind that luscious 16m colour 2.5-inch touchscreen display is a T-DMB digital TV receiver, mp3 player with support for various common formats, and video player capable of handling H.264, MPEG4 and WMV9.  With the earphones acting as aerial (hence no ugly retractable stub hanging out the side) it can manage 30fps video which is pretty damned impressive.

Optional extras include expandable storage via what looks like SD and a docking station, while the pen-stylus seems to double as a handy stand.  Battery life is good for 10 hours of video, 9 hours of digital TV and a whopping 52 hours of music, and it's available in black, white, red, pink, and lime.

Many more photos of the D2 after the cut.

Cowon A2 PMP gets unboxed

Cowon A2 PMP gets unboxed

Leaving presents for departing colleagues are tricky things to judge.  First there's the harrowing task of going round the office looking for donations - you're bound to resurrect a few "he stole my favourite mug!"-style gripes - and then you have to decide what to buy.  If you're a woman, it's a pretty good chance that you'll either get toiletries (you are legally obligated by the terms of your contract to make the "are you trying to say that I smell?" joke) or some dubious jewellery; if you're a man, then you might get the biography of whichever sportsperson has recently retired, or worse-still some sort of bargain gadget from the supermarket.  "Thanks, I've always wanted a pedometer-cum-alcohol-units-calculator."  So it's fair to say that Doug over at Gear Diary struck lucky when finishing a contract recently - they gave him hard cash!

Being a shameless geek, Doug took that cash and, rather than donating it to sick ponies, bought himself a shiny new Cowon A2 PMP.  To assuage his guilt he's decided to share the unboxing ceremony with us.  Thanks Doug!

Cowon iAudio U3

Cowon iAudio U3

The Cowon iAudio U3 is a compact, very full-featured flash-based MP3 player that's available in 1GB ($169.99 direct) and 2GB ($219.99) models. It has video playback capabilities, but given the tiny screen, they're not exactly its main attraction. Available in "Noble" white or "Platinum" black, the iAudio U3 has more features than the Apple iPod nano, but its harder to use, compared to an iPod and still, the iPod is much cheaper.

Apple Store (RED) lights recognize World AIDS Day

This weekend Apple recognized World AIDS Day in bright red lights and red innards across the world.
