2014 Chevrolet Spark EV Test Drive

2014 Chevrolet Spark EV Test Drive

Chevrolet has big ambitions for its tiniest electric car, the Spark EV. The earth-friendly city car follows the Volt, dropping the gas engine in the process and embracing emissions-free motoring at a competitive price. As we've seen, though, small EVs can easily fall into the trap of being so eco earnest as to be deathly dull, or alternatively entirely impractical for everyday use. Can the Spark EV keep the best of its gas-powered predecessor and blend it with the benefits of electric motoring? We caught up with Chevrolet for an extended test-drive to see how the Spark EV fared.

Chevrolet CrossVolt resparks hybrid crossover chatter

Chevrolet may be busy preparing the new 2016 Volt for its debut in Detroit in just a few weeks time, but the rumor mill is heaving with the renewed possibility of a companion hybrid crossover, the CrossVolt. GM's lawyers have been busy renewing the CrossVolt trademark at the USPTO, sparking again the chatter of a meatier model to use the Voltec powertrain freshly developed for its revamped hybrid. With almost five years under its belt since it revealed the Chevrolet Volt MPV5 concept shown here, however, GM's strategy for expanding on hybrids and EVs still isn't clear.

GM slashes ELR and Spark EV to regen green auto

GM is slashing EV and hybrid car pricing at both the budget and luxury ends of the spectrum, as it attempts to spur last-gasp sales while new models are readied. At the fancy end of the scale, Cadillac has made further reductions on its distinctive but little-loved ELR hybrid coupe, a car which has struggled to find buyers since its debut two years ago. Meanwhile, down at the compact level, Chevrolet is dropping Spark EV pricing in an attempt to get more drivers into its all-electric city car.

2016 Chevrolet Volt arrives with extended range and seats

As hinted way back in November, Chevrolet has come out with a new version of its Volt hybrid electric vehicle in time for the 2015 Detroit Auto Show this week. If there's a common theme to this new EV, it would be "more". The car boasts of an increased EV range of 50 miles, 420 miles if you count on the "extended range" mode. It now also boasts of five seats, up from the previous four. The only thing that seemingly didn't increase is the weight of certain parts.
