This adds some new hope that the next-gen Apple smartphone will indeed be a more radically revamped iPhone 5 instead of the minor iPhone 4S upgrade. Speculation involving the two possible models continue to flip flop, but we're certainly rooting for a next-gen iPhone that looks like the aluminum and glass mockup we saw earlier today. Although Apple is on track with a low-end iPhone, based on the current iPhone 4, for an aggressively priced holiday push, 9 to 5 Mac‘s sources say, the true fifth-gen iPhone is experiencing significant production issues and may well be delayed and/or initially in short supply.

Apple’s iPhone 5 is “just weeks away” from being unveiled, according to an unnamed source at the company, with rumors still indicating that it will be a significant departure from the current iPhone 4. Though Apple is yet to confirm any plans itself, speculation has coalesced on a late-September or early-October announcement, something a Bits insider apparently confirms. Those sources also suggest that the Case-Mate cases teasingly posted then pulled by the accessory company “seemed potentially authentic.”
