Intel Atom Oak Trail, Canoe Lake and super-skinny netbook design revealed [Video]

Intel's latest Atom plans have been revealed at Computex 2010, and unsurprisingly the company are looking to tablets along with netbooks.  Intel Atom "Oak Trail" is the tablet and ultra-sleek netbook platform, a SoC designed for fanless devices with extended battery life and 1080p HD video, while the "Canoe Lake" innovation platform takes the new Pine Trail N Atom CPUs - with their boosted performance but frugal power requirements - pairs them with DDR3 memory and squeezes them into "razor-thin" netbooks like the 14mm thick dual-core machine teased last month.

Pack up the space canoe: 200 mile “Mini Nile” spotted on Saturn moon Titan

Pack up the space canoe: 200 mile “Mini Nile” spotted on Saturn moon Titan

NASA has identified what appears to be a huge river system on Saturn's moon Titan, after the spacecraft Cassini performed a close flyby and snapped photos of what's believed to be a 200 mile long, liquid-filled trench. The river valley, compared to Earth's Nile River by NASA by virtue of its sheer scale, is the largest ever to have been observed other than on our planet, though it's not filled with water. Instead, the Titan river is believed to be made up of the liquid hydrocarbons that give the moon its unusual precipitation.

MeeGo gets serious: Wistron, Quanta & CZC tablets spied [Video]

Intel are going full steam ahead with MeeGo at Computex this week, with multiple name-checks for the open-source OS during the keynote and several manufacturers implicated in pushing out MeeGo-based devices.  In among the Oak Trail/Canoe Lake information was confirmation that Acer will be developing MeeGo tablets and netbooks, while there are brief details on Quanta's Redvale MeeGo tablet, together with the Wistron W1 and CZC P10T tablets spotted by Carrypad on show at the Intel booth.

Evidence hints Canadian comet impact triggered prehistoric climate shift

Evidence hints Canadian comet impact triggered prehistoric climate shift

A group of scientists from Canada have discovered evidence that an extraplanetary body came down over Canada about 12,900 years ago. The evidence suggests that the comet might have triggered the death of giant animals roaming North America and triggered a cooling spell in the Earth's climate. Scientists say that during the Younger Dryas climatic period temperatures fell sharply.

Atom N550 benchmarks suggest doubled performance over N450

Atom N550 benchmarks suggest doubled performance over N450

It seems ASUS were playing silly beggars at Computex this year, with their demo Eee PC 1015PN and 1015N netbooks both labelled as using Intel Atom N475 processors whereas actually they packed Intel's newer dual-core Atom N550 chips.  NotebookItalia spotted the discrepancy - the correct processors showed up in the system integration - and promptly ran some benchmarks to see quite how much of a boost the N550 brings over previous generation netbooks.  The good news is that the N550 bests not only the N450 but some Intel CULV chips.
