ARM server pioneer Calxeda pulls plug

ARM server startup and Intel threat Calxeda has unexpectedly shut down, after running out of cash before it could convince the enterprise that lots of smaller chips made better sense. The company had intended to steal server marketshare from under Intel's nose by piecing together hundreds of ARM-based chips in a single system, rather than following the more traditional route of a few, high-power x86 processors. However, the financing ran down before Calxeda could meet its roadmap.

Welcome to Thursday evening, everyone. This afternoon we had a bunch of quarterly reports hit, and some were better than others. Google posted its quarterly report a little prematurely, a blunder that had a hand in driving down the price of the company's stock. Later on in the day, we heard from Microsoft, which managed to do pretty good in its first quarter. Sadly, AMD posted its results for quarter 3 just a little while ago, and things aren't looking too good for the company - in fact, it says that it will have to layoff around 15% of its workforce in an attempt to save some money.

First-gen HP Project Moonshot bypasses ARM for Intel

If you recall, HP’s Project Moonshot was an attempt ot create an ultra low-power server using ARM’s Calxeda, allowing the company to pack a large number of servers into a single rack unit. Now it looks like HP has decided to move in a different direction, announcing that it will be initially using Intel’s “Centerton” Atom chips instead. HP say they went with Atom due to the 64-bit support, hardware virtualization, low power requirements, and a broader software ecosystem.

HP Project Moonshot reveals low-power Redstone ARM servers

HP's home PC group may be struggling to find its place in the segment, but the company's more business-centric arm is having no such quandries: HP has just launched Project Moonshot, intended to dramatically slash power consumption by using CPU-stuffed chips like ARM's Calxeda. The densely packed processors mean HP can squeeze over 2,800 servers into a single HP Redstone Server Development Platform rack unit, demanding up to 89 percent less energy and 94 percent less space.

ARM server chips taking on Intel with 480 core clusters

Microsoft isn't the only company looking to many lower-powered chips to replace a few high-powered CPUs in modern servers; ARM's first server processor has been detailed by Calxeda, a quad-core chip squeezing up to 480 cores in a 2U chassis. According to Computer World, the new ARM processors will be based on Cortex A9 cores - the same family as used in NVIDIA's Tegra 2 - and have an onboard interconnect fabric for communication between the nodes.
