RIM: BlackBerry “fully restored” but no compensation news

, Oct 13th 2011 Discuss [2]

“You expect better of us, I expect better of us.” So RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis opened the company’s apologetic BlackBerry press conference this morning, before swiftly pointing out that services have now been “fully restored”. As for compensation, however, fellow co-CEO Jim Balsillie said RIM has no idea, at present, what or even if that could be “Our focus has been 100-percent on getting services restored,” he told investors and journalists, “that’s something we’re going to focus on now, but it hasn’t been our priority overnight.”

RIM investor dissent grows amid embarrassing service failures

, Oct 11th 2011 Discuss [0]

Dissent among RIM investors grows, with vocal management critic Jaguar claiming support for the Canadian company being sold or broken up has increased in the space of a month. The commercial bank is demanding a "transformative leader" in place of the current co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, Reuters reports, and says it has the backing of 8-percent of investor backers, a rise from the roughly 5-percent Jaguar said it had back in September. RIM must monetize patents or sell up investors demand

, Sep 6th 2011 Discuss [2]

RIM is facing pressure to spin off its patents, with investors demanding that the Canadian company either consider monetizing its IP or give serious consideration to selling itself. The proposals have been spawned by Jaguar Financial Corp., which told SFGate that RIM's sole focus on its incoming QNX product line-up amounts to putting "all your eggs in one basket" and leaves the firm facing potential bankruptcy in the manner of Nortel Networks. RIM’s Damage Control was Blandly Inevitable

, Jun 30th 2011 Discuss [3]

What can you learn from how a company takes criticism? Headlines-a-plenty today, as an anonymous “senior RIM executive” takes the time to pen an eight part breakdown of where the Canadian company falls short and what steps it needs to take if it’s to reverse its dwindling market share. RIM arguably did itself few favors with its response, either, a terse and defensive blast that questions the letter’s authenticity – admittedly something we have to take on trust – and then dismisses the concerns with a wave of the hand.

BlackBerry Storm 3 not dead after all? Three models tipped; PlayBook 2 in 2H 2011?

, Oct 14th 2010 Discuss [6]

Talk of the BlackBerry Storm 3's cancellation may have been premature, according to analysts Jefferies & Co., who blame multiple SKUs of the third-generation touchscreen smartphone for the confusion.  They claim RIM was working on three BlackBerry Storm 3 devices, a haptic touch model that has indeed been cancelled, a non-haptic version "with similar thickness, more memory, and [BlackBerry 6]" which is still on course for a release by the end of November, and then a Storm 3 with a "new iPhone-like form factor, but slimmer," that could run QNX. BlackBerry Storm 9570 project axed?

, Oct 8th 2010 Discuss [0]

RIM are believed to have axed their upcoming BlackBerry Storm 9570 refresh, though it's unclear whether the Canadian company has frozen the Storm product line completely or just this one device.  According to BBLeaks source - who appears to be a software developer working on code for RIM - a recent missive from the company said they had "decided not to pursue this device further" and that they have "ended the program." Verizon BlackBerry Storm2 shows up in 3D

, Oct 20th 2009 Discuss [1]

Despite the fact that Verizon's CEO has admitted to flaunting a BlackBerry Storm2 and Walt Mossberg has reviewed the CDMA handset, RIM have made no official statement about the second-gen touchscreen smartphone heading to the US carrier.  It seems the website team responsible for Verizon's pages haven't been so cautious, however; a 3D handset viewer is just one of the pre-announcement Storm2 tidbits available to play with already. Vodafone BlackBerry Storm 2 9520 arrives October 26th in UK

, Oct 15th 2009 Discuss [0]

It's beginning to get a little ridiculous now: after Walt Mossberg reviews the BlackBerry Storm 2 ahead of any official confirmation by RIM themselves that the device actually exists, now Vodafone UK have announced that they'll be the first network to offer the second-generation touchscreen smartphone.  Available to preorder from today, and with deliveries set to begin on October 26th, the Vodafone Blackberry Storm 2 9520 is priced from free with a new plan costing £35/mo ($56) upwards. BlackBerry Storm 2 gets the Mossberg review; RIM still tight-lipped

, Oct 15th 2009 Discuss [0]

We'll let you into a secret: embargoes are the janky, frustrating glue that keeps the tech business rolling, and it doesn't take much to bring everything crashing down.  Someone has obviously been fiddling with Walt Mossberg's clocks, as the AllThingsD writer and generally bearded-lovely has pushed out his review of not only the Motorola CLIQ - you can read our opinion on that phone here - but of the BlackBerry Storm 2. The review comes on the heels of Verizon's CEO scooping RIM to their own Storm 2 announcement, as we discovered yesterday.  There's no way of knowing exactly whether Mossberg had special dispensation to publish early - it wouldn't be the first time he's had privileged access ahead of everyone else - but since we're still hungry for Storm 2 details we'll forgive him anyway. BlackBerry Storm 2 confirmed by Verizon CEO

, Oct 14th 2009 Discuss [1]

If the previews, demos and leaks weren't enough to convince you that RIM have a BlackBerry Storm 2 on the way, how about outright confirmation from Lowell C. McAdam, CEO of Verizon.  The exec has revealed that he's been carrying the Storm 2 for the past few weeks, including giving impromptu demonstrations of the second-gen touchscreen smartphone at Verizon stores. BlackBerry Storm 2 9550 gets previewed: plenty of rough edges

, Oct 1st 2009 Discuss [1]

Just how many pre-production BlackBerry Storm 2 9550 handsets are there out there, waiting to be previewed ahead of the touchscreen handset's release?  We don't know the answer to that, but phoneArena obviously have one since they've just pushed out a preview of their own.  In it, they praise the Storm 2 for its much improved keyboard, but scold it for its dodgy stability, poor camera performance and "gimmicky" SurePress. BlackBerry Storm 2 piezo touchscreen tech detailed [Video]

, Aug 24th 2009 Discuss [0]

One of the most eagerly anticipated elements of the upcoming BlackBerry Storm 2 is its new touchscreen, which is promised to address the disappointing display of its predecessor.  Details of the new panel have now been revealed, courtesy of a freshly-unearthed YouTube video; it apparently uses a piezo-electronic layer that can recognize touch-pressure at multiple simultaneous points rather than the single, central hardware button of the first-gen Storm. The benefit is not just multiple points of touch recognition with the same tactile response as the first-gen Storm, but that it reacts quicker because the piezo system is electronic rather than physical.  There are also no dead-spots - such as the corners on the Storm, which were always tougher to press - and the display physically locks itself hard when shut-off and then softens when turned on. Video after the cut Read The Full Story
