BlackBerry PlayBook sequel unlikely as Heins slams tablets

BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins has dismissed the long-term potential for tablets, arguing that time is running out on slates and - perhaps still stinging from the PlayBook failure - suggesting they're a bad business model. Heins, who had been suitably ebullient about the likely success of the recently-released BlackBerry Q10, predicting sales in the tens of millions, was equally critical of tablet options. "In five years I don't think there'll be a reason to have a tablet anymore" he predicted.

A new Blackberry 10 roadmap, leaked by a mysterious Twitter account, shows that Blackberry has a few interesting devices heading our way. Of course, we have to take this information with a grain of salt, but nonetheless, it does show us an interesting new future for Blackberry. RIM partners with 7digital for the Blackberry 10 music store

RIM has announced that 7digital will be its official music download service for the upcoming Blackberry 10 smartphones. According to the press release, the Blackberry App World will offer 7digital's catalog of over 22 million tracks, which includes new releases, independent artists, regional selections, and a back catalog of content. The Blackberry PlayBook and Blackberry smartphones' respective music stores are currently powered by 7digital.

It's no secret that the iPad is the most successful tablet computer on the market by a giant margin, but a statistic in RIM's recent earnings call on the sales of their own BlackBerry PlayBook should flip your lid. Noting that they'd had sales of 130,000 units with the PlayBook throughout the last quarter, Research in Motion inadvertently showed how the tablet is doing up against its Apple competitor. In comparison, Apple's most recent earnings report showed the company to be selling approximately 188 thousand iPads a day.
