RIM may have no intention of exiting the consumer market, despite its appalling recent quarter, but the consumer market itself looks like it's inescapably drifting away from BlackBerry. CEO Thorsten Heins is still apparently wedded to BlackBerry 10, the company's next-gen OS, suggesting during yesterday's financial release that RIM would consider licensing it out to rivals. However, insiders at the firm are growing increasingly outspoken, with calls that RIM should abandon the platform "experiment" and instead follow Nokia in leaping to Windows Phone and Microsoft's warm embrace. At first glance, Porsche Design and BlackBerry might not make obvious bed-fellows. Still, the car firm’s aesthetically-obsessed arm has taken up with Canada’s finest, and the Porsche Design P’9981 is the result: maple syrup by way of Stuttgart. The less forgiving might draw comparisons between Porsche’s legendary reluctance to diverge from its original 1963 car design, and BlackBerry’s struggle to break free of its old OS. RIM's new CEO faces a dual-challenge, Apple in North America and the ascendence of Samsung in Europe, according new research, though BlackBerry is a surprise hold-out in the UK. "Android and Apple together are eating BlackBerry's lunch" Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillett said of the smartphone pincer-movement, the NYTimes reports, with global stats indicating 27-percent of smartphone users have an Android device and 24-percent an iPhone. RIM’s new CEO is a Placeholder not a Prophet

After listening to RIM’s new CEO Thursten Heins talk this morning, you could almost hear investors kicking themselves for not being specific enough in their demands for refreshed leadership at the BlackBerry company. “We shouldn’t have just asked for a new CEO” shareholders are no doubt muttering, “but made clear we wanted one with new ideas too.” Heins, for all his hyperbole about the BlackBerry advantage being its “integrated solution” of hardware, software and services, showed his true colors when he argued that “I don’t think there is a drastic change needed.” Those colors, it seems, are exactly the same shades as Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie preferred during their tenure at the top. So, is this new CEO simply a temporary placeholder or a sign of fresh misery to come?

RIM has responded to allegations that a significant number of its enterprise customers plan to defect from the BlackBerry platform in 2012, suggesting that they're probably unhappy because they're not using the latest models from its range. The Canadian company has not had a chance to review the EMA findings - which discovered 30-percent of businesses with 10,000 or more BlackBerry users intend to ditch the platform next year - it said, but "would be interested in finding out" whether those questioned were using BlackBerry 7 phones on Enterprise Server v5.0.3. RIM may believe its BlackBerry outage compensation is "a pretty comprehensive set of efforts" but it may not be enough to staunch the flow of users ditching the platform, according to new research. A full 30-percent of large scale BlackBerry users plan to jump ship in 2012, Enterprise Management Associates' figures claim, with a mere 14-percent of users themselves happy with their RIM smartphone. In total, RIM plans to make twelve titles free to download - collectively priced at over $100 normally - including a mixture of games and utilities.
