Nokia Lumia 900 review

, Apr 3rd 2012 Discuss [0]

Over the last year Nokia’s had something of a tumultuous time in the mobile industry. While still a power to be feared in the featurephone market, their lack of presence in the smartphone market has been keenly felt. With T-Mobile’s Lumia 710 as a prelude, the Finnish giant makes a return in earnest with the Lumia 900 on AT&T’s LTE network. Its features and design are immediately attractive, but perhaps more so is the price: just $99 on-contract, or free for new AT&T customers. Can a combination of great design, high-end features and price make a bold statement for Nokia? Let’s find out.

BlackBerry ‘not a toy’ ads may save the company

, Mar 30th 2012 Discuss [0]

In an earnings call detailing an abysmal quarter for BlackBerry, Research in Motion (aka RIM) this week made a perfect case for the necessity of their "toy" ads out on the airwaves now. These advertisements are representing the BlackBerry Bold line of devices and have celebrities as well as unnamed users stating "We need tools, not toys." As RIM stated this week, it's time for a shakeup, and the ad campaign we're seeing right here may well be it. Read The Full Story

Ditch BB10 and rebuild on Windows Phone rants RIM insider

, Mar 30th 2012 Discuss [0]

RIM may have no intention of exiting the consumer market, despite its appalling recent quarter, but the consumer market itself looks like it's inescapably drifting away from BlackBerry. CEO Thorsten Heins is still apparently wedded to BlackBerry 10, the company's next-gen OS, suggesting during yesterday's financial release that RIM would consider licensing it out to rivals. However, insiders at the firm are growing increasingly outspoken, with calls that RIM should abandon the platform "experiment" and instead follow Nokia in leaping to Windows Phone and Microsoft's warm embrace. RIM pushes HTML5 apps amid Canada user exodus

, Mar 23rd 2012 Discuss [0]

RIM has turned to courting HTML5-curious developers as a stopgap solution to slumping BlackBerry sales in Canada and elsewhere, arguing the case for universal webapps to counter coder apathy. BlackBerry marketshare in Canada - not RIM's biggest single market, but meaningful as it is the firm's home turf - has dipped below iPhone levels this week, hand in hand with decreasing levels of developer interest as BlackBerry 10's late 2012 launch looks unpalatably distant. That's prompted a charm offensive by RIM code champions, pushing HTML5 development as preferable to native code. Read The Full Story

, Mar 20th 2012 Discuss [0]

Emoticons are the little smiley's and other combinations of characters that people use online in text messages to indicate emotion. They're sort of like online equivalent of a smirk to let people know you're kidding or being sarcastic when you say something that could be construed as mean. This week a company called Varia Holdings filed a lawsuit against Samsung and RIM over patent infringement. Read The Full Story

BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981 Review

, Feb 14th 2012 Discuss [0]

At first glance, Porsche Design and BlackBerry might not make obvious bed-fellows. Still, the car firm’s aesthetically-obsessed arm has taken up with Canada’s finest, and the Porsche Design P’9981 is the result: maple syrup by way of Stuttgart. The less forgiving might draw comparisons between Porsche’s legendary reluctance to diverge from its original 1963 car design, and BlackBerry’s struggle to break free of its old OS. The frugal will likely be too busy gaping at the $2,350 price tag. So, Porsche or Pinto? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

BlackBerry “Bold Team” cartoon caper falls flat

, Jan 31st 2012 Discuss [2]

RIM has found itself the butt of BlackBerry jokes, after a superhero infographic promotion was mistaken for a new advertising campaign. "The Bold Team" was presented as how RIM would "be bold in 2012", a quartet of personalities - "achiever", "adventurer" "advocate" and "authentic" - each representing an aspect of how the company hoped its BlackBerry handsets would be perceived. Unfortunately, the actual perception was one of bemusement. Read The Full Story
