Microsoft joins Barnes & Noble for NOOK Media LLC subsidiary

With Microsoft bringing on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 later this month, it's no wonder why they're looking to team up with as many partners as possible for the launch - and it appears that Barnes & Noble is next on the list. Today Barnes & Noble and Microsoft have announced a new joint venture - a subsidiary, even - called NOOK MEDIA LLC. This group will include Barnes & Noble's NOOK Digital and College Businesses and the Microsoft Investment to Advance Digital Reading Experience group.

Barnes & Noble has been making its Nook line of eReaders for a while now. Yesterday Barnes & Noble announced it was cutting prices on two of its most popular Nook products. Barnes & Noble adds maps to Nook with skobbler

Barnes & Noble adds maps to Nook with skobbler

Barnes & Noble’s Nook tablets are limited in their mapping abilities, currently relying on Google's web interface to access any kind of maps. That’s set to change today, as the company has announced a partnership with skobbler that will see the Nook tablets gain the ability to natively search and view maps. It’s an interesting move from Barnes & Noble to avoid using Google’s services, although we imagine the advent of the Nexus 7 and its low price point has made the company’s options clearer.

Barnes & Noble NOOK sales slump; pins hopes on GlowLight

Barnes & Noble NOOK sales slump; pins hopes on GlowLight

Barnes & Noble has reported its fiscal 2012 financial results, and it's bad news for NOOK as revenues from the digital ereader hardware business slump. While digital content sales grew year-on-year, up 65-percent for the most recent quarter, revenue from hardware sales dipped more than 10-percent. B&N says NOOK business sales overall were up in 2012 as a whole, but Q4 performance dived as retailers struggled to shift the ereaders.

NOOK Audio coming from Barnes and Noble soon

NOOK Audio coming from Barnes and Noble soon

It appears that either Barnes & Noble played a very low-key April Fool's joke on unsuspecting NOOK lovers this week, or they're bringing a NOOK Audio device to the market very soon. What we're seeing today is a NOOK Audio model number OE250 page on Barnes & Noble thanks to intrepid searchers at The Digital Reader where they also note that the company filed for a trademark for that name all the way back in February (last month.) Will Barnes & Noble be releasing an MP3 player soon?

Barnes & Noble sets up German arm: European Nook incoming?

While Europeans certainly don’t have any trouble getting their hands on ereaders, Barnes & Noble’s Nook has been confined to the United States during its tenure. That may be set to change, as Barnes & Noble has established a new company in Germany, Barnes & Noble Digital Media GmbH. The company was filed two weeks ago, around the same time that Barnes & Noble paid a visit to London to try and get developers on board with the Nook.

Barnes & Noble Nook Touch gets ‘fast refresh’ hack

Barnes & Noble Nook Touch gets ‘fast refresh’ hack

Hackers come in all shapes and sizes, and so do the devices they toil away on to try to gain some sort of Internet fame or just personal satisfaction. In that context, the Nook Touch isn't exactly the place for a hotbed of hacking activity but someone has still managed to pull off an exploit that's pretty interesting. The hack involves exponentially increasing the e-reader's refresh rate.

Barnes & Noble NOOK $199 tablet a godsend

Barnes & Noble NOOK $199 tablet a godsend

Though Barnes & Noble's earnings call appears to have turned up sour for the most part, the NOOK lineup may have saved the book company from going Borders way. Having tested the original NOOK Color out back at the start of 2011 when it was released, giving a run down through and through, I can comfortably say the following: $199 for an upgraded version in the NOOK Tablet is quite the deal. You've got a high quality tablet that interacts with the Barnes & Noble store like no other, it costs the same as its biggest competitor, and it's not the same shape as the BlackBerry PlayBook.
