Viewpad 10 crashes tablet party with Atom N550 in tow

If you are into tablets that run Android at all you probably are aware of the Viewpad 10 from the first time we talked about it back in November 2010. The little tablet surfaced with an Atom N450 CPU and Android as the OS. If you like the style and idea of that tablet but found yourself wishing that it ran Windows and had more CPU oomph you will like the version that has now surfaced.

HP Mini 5103 Equipped with Intel Dual-Core Atom N550 Processor Soon

HP Mini 5103 Equipped with Intel Dual-Core Atom N550 Processor Soon

When Intel announces that one of their chips will be appearing in a plethora of netbooks, we can understand why those netbook manufacturers might be slow to update their sites. Especially when the new chip is dropping into netbooks that, for all intents and purposes, are new themselves. For example, it was only the beginning of August that we told you about HP's Mini 5103, which --at the time-- featured Intel's single-core N455 or N475 processors. Well, it looks like that's about to change.

Intel Dual-Core Atom N550 Processor Ready to Ship

Intel Dual-Core Atom N550 Processor Ready to Ship

First revealed back at Computex, Intel's dual-core Atom N550 processor for netbooks was a tease that many of us here couldn't wait to get our hands on. Unfortunately, while the processor has "ready-to-ship" tagged to it, it doesn't look like the processor is being included in any netbooks actually shipping at this very moment.

Acer and ASUS freezing netbook/ultra-thin releases over Atom N550 uncertainty?

Acer and ASUS freezing netbook/ultra-thin releases over Atom N550 uncertainty?

If you've held off from buying a netbook because there always seems to be a new model - and a price cut - just around the corner, now might be the time to buy. Acer and ASUS are reportedly freezing netbook releases until around mid-August, according to DigiTimes' market sources, to clear their inventory in the face of the incoming Atom N550 processor.  However, Intel's pricing for the new chip - and their uncertain plans for the Celeron processor range - are prompting uncertainty.

Atom N550 benchmarks suggest doubled performance over N450

Atom N550 benchmarks suggest doubled performance over N450

It seems ASUS were playing silly beggars at Computex this year, with their demo Eee PC 1015PN and 1015N netbooks both labelled as using Intel Atom N475 processors whereas actually they packed Intel's newer dual-core Atom N550 chips.  NotebookItalia spotted the discrepancy - the correct processors showed up in the system integration - and promptly ran some benchmarks to see quite how much of a boost the N550 brings over previous generation netbooks.  The good news is that the N550 bests not only the N450 but some Intel CULV chips.

Intel outline Atom N550 netbook expectations: sub-$399 for dual-core ultraportables

Intel outline Atom N550 netbook expectations: sub-$399 for dual-core ultraportables

Details of the upcoming Intel Atom N550 processor - and the sort of netbooks Intel reckon their dual-core 1.5GHz chip should end up in - have emerged, and according to Fudzilla the platform will sit alongside, rather than replacing, their single-core Atom line-up.  Intel have supposedly been telling manufacturing partners that they should be aiming for the $349 to $399 price bracket for machines using the new N550, pairing the CPU with either a 20-32GB SSD or 250GB HDD.

Toshiba NB500 and NB520 netbooks pack dual-core Atom [Video]

Toshiba NB500 and NB520 netbooks pack dual-core Atom [Video]

Toshiba has outed a pair of new netbooks, the NB500 and the NB520, each toting Intel's latest dual-core Atom N550 1.5GHz processor. Each machine gets 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard-drive - shock-protected on the NB520 - and WiFi, but the NB520 also throws in Harman/Kardon Speakers which, thanks to a "sleep audio" function, can be used with an external PMP source even when the netbook is turned off.

Intel axing Celeron by 2011 in favor of dual-core Atom

Intel axing Celeron by 2011 in favor of dual-core Atom

Looks like the Taipei mutterings earlier this week of Intel canning their Celeron CPUs may be true, with DigiTimes reporting that the company has informed manufacturing partners that the low-cost processors will be phased out sometime in 2011.  The change will leave more room for the new dual-core Atom CPUs, such as the N550, which will arrive in Q3 2010 at similar prices to the current Celeron chips.
