Intel Atom N450 “Pine View” coming October

Intel Atom N450 “Pine View” coming October

According to those talkative "industry sources", Intel is preparing to phase out the Atom N270 processor in October by launching its replacement, the Atom N450.  Better known by its codename, Pine View, the N450 will be a single-core chip built on Intel's 45nm processing line and have an integrated northbridge.  That timescale was last tipped from manufacturing leaks back in May, when it was also revealed that the N280 also faced the chop.

Atom N550 benchmarks suggest doubled performance over N450

Atom N550 benchmarks suggest doubled performance over N450

It seems ASUS were playing silly beggars at Computex this year, with their demo Eee PC 1015PN and 1015N netbooks both labelled as using Intel Atom N475 processors whereas actually they packed Intel's newer dual-core Atom N550 chips.  NotebookItalia spotted the discrepancy - the correct processors showed up in the system integration - and promptly ran some benchmarks to see quite how much of a boost the N550 brings over previous generation netbooks.  The good news is that the N550 bests not only the N450 but some Intel CULV chips.

Viewpad 10 crashes tablet party with Atom N550 in tow

If you are into tablets that run Android at all you probably are aware of the Viewpad 10 from the first time we talked about it back in November 2010. The little tablet surfaced with an Atom N450 CPU and Android as the OS. If you like the style and idea of that tablet but found yourself wishing that it ran Windows and had more CPU oomph you will like the version that has now surfaced.

Intel Dual-Core Atom N550 Processor Ready to Ship

Intel Dual-Core Atom N550 Processor Ready to Ship

First revealed back at Computex, Intel's dual-core Atom N550 processor for netbooks was a tease that many of us here couldn't wait to get our hands on. Unfortunately, while the processor has "ready-to-ship" tagged to it, it doesn't look like the processor is being included in any netbooks actually shipping at this very moment.

Intel Atom “storage optimized” platform promises faster NAS

Intel Atom “storage optimized” platform promises faster NAS

Intel's Atom processors may be best known for their role in netbooks, but the low-power chips have also been making inroads into always-on devices such as NAS, RAID arrays and small servers.  It comes as little surprise, then, that Intel have pushed out its first "storage-optimized" Atom-based platform, using the latest D410 and dualcore D510 CPUs paired with the high-throughput Intel 82801IR I/O Controller.  Apparently the platform has already been picked up by LaCie, LG, QNAP, Synology and Thecus for upcoming products.

Intel Atom N455 and N475 quietly debut

Intel Atom N455 and N475 quietly debut

Intel may have officially announced the Atom N470 processor today - well, actually they pulled the trigger early on Saturday - but that isn't the only new CPU at CeBIT 2010 this week.  As we've seen on netbooks like the ASUS Eee PC 1018P Prime, Intel have also launched the Atom N455 and Atom N475.  The two variant chips are obviously based on the 1.66GHz N450 and 1.83GHz N470 processors, but apparently add in support for DDR3 memory.

Intel Atom N470 gets early announcement

The existence of Intel's Atom N470 processor - a step up from the N450 powering the Toshiba NB305 we reviewed yesterday - hasn't exactly been a secret, but the company have seen fit to officially announce it today.  In a chipshot press release dated March 1st (looks like someone pulled the trigger a little early) the company describes the N470 as running at 1.83GHz with 512kb of L2 cache and support for DDR2-667 memory.
