ASUS slashing netbook prices as tablets take market; MSI dropping out completely?

, Dec 28th 2010 Discuss [0]

The market obsession with tablets has left netbook manufacturers facing significant price cuts and even abandoning the segment altogether, according to channel sources. DigiTimes claims that ASUS has slashed the retail cost of its latest Atom N450 and dual-core N550 netbooks after attempts to position them based on style and specifications fell short, while MSI is tipped to be "phased out of the market" altogether. Acer Aspire One D255 Review

, Oct 28th 2010 Discuss [15]

What difference a dual-core? As we’ve seen from the ASUS Eee PC 1215N, just because an ultraportable might be called a netbook, it doesn’t mean it’s necessarily short on power. Still, the Acer Aspire One D255 doesn’t get NVIDIA’s Optimus GPU to bolster its appeal, nor a desktop Atom CPU co-opted into mobile duty. Instead it offers the dualcore 1.5GHz Atom N550 and a mere 1GB of RAM. Are we expecting too much from this budget machine? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

ASUS Eee PC 1215N Review

, Oct 18th 2010 Discuss [6]

The line between a netbook and a notebook used to be pretty straightforward, but with Intel’s increasingly powerful Atom processors and NVIDIA’s ambitious Ion-powered Optimus graphics, the distinction is more blurred. Typifying this new breed of netbook is ASUS’ Eee PC 1215N, a 12.1-inch Seashell-series machine that could well be considered a true ultraportable despite its roughly $500 price tag. Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

ASUS Eee PC 1215N gets reviewed: bargain 12-inches

, Aug 31st 2010 Discuss [0]

When is a netbook not really a netbook?  Why, when it gets a desktop version of Intel's Atom CPU, has notebook-style Optimus graphics, and - arguably - a larger display than 10.1-inches.  By those counts, ASUS should be calling their Eee PC 1215N a 12.1-inch ultraportable not a netbook, but then they might put the price up from $499 and, according to Laptop, then we'd be missing out on something of a bargain. ASUS' Eee PC 1201PN netbook has gone up for preorder at Amazon Germany, with three versions of the 12-inch ultraportable being on offer.  Priced at €479 ($600), the netbook packs a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 250GB hard-drive, as well as NVIDIA Ion graphics (though no NVIDIA Optimus automatic switching). ASUS Eee PC 1215N: dual-core 1.5GHz Atom, NVIDIA Ion, Optimus & July release?

, May 6th 2010 Discuss [0]

More details on the ASUS Eee PC 1215N are seeping out, ahead of the netbook's expected debut on May 13th, and it's shaping up to be a pretty impressive ultraportable.  According to AllAboutEeePC the 1215N will indeed have the new dual-core 1.5GHz Pine Trail Atom N500 processor expected to hit production in July, together with NVIDIA's Ion GPU.  However, unlike the Eee PC 1215PN, the 1215N will support NVIDIA Optimus for automatic graphics switching. Intel Atom N455/N475 CPUs imminent; dual-core N500 in June?

, Apr 26th 2010 Discuss [0]

Intel's Atom N455 and N475 processors are apparently due for launch "shortly", according to DigiTimes' sources, after the chips were unofficially previewed back at CeBIT 2010 in March.  They'll supposedly be succeeded by the launch of the dual-core Atom N500 series in June, at which point we're told Intel will spill the beans on their third-gen netbook platform. Asus Eee 1215N and 1201PN info surfaces in Italy [Updated with NVIDIA comment]

, Apr 23rd 2010 Discuss [0]

I mentioned earlier this morning that rumors were surfacing that the Eee 1201PN netbook would offer next generation Ion without using Optimus tech. More information on the 1201PN and another netbook called the 1215N has surfaced in Italy. Update: According to NVIDIA, "ASUS decided to use the same motherboard without Optimus to go to market and launch Optimus later with the same design and a dual core CPU" - thanks Laura!
