HOTT MD500 super-budget Android MID taunts us on video

Remember the 7-inch HOTT MD700 MID spotted back at CES 2010 and tipped to be arriving at distributors priced at $120 apiece?  The Chinese company is back with another, smaller model, and the best news is that it should be even cheaper: the HOTT MD500 has a 4.8-inch display and runs Android, and will be just $92 for distributors (assuming you only use microSD for storage).

Dell Mini 5 MID live video

Dell Mini 5 MID live video

Dell were playing the Mini 5 pretty close to their chest back at CES 2010, but the company was a little more open with the MID at MobileFocus this week.  We grabbed some hands-on time, and we have to say we're impressed; the Mini 5 makes the Archos 5 Internet Tablet feel clunky, and while it's just a little too large to be comfortably used as a smartphone, with full phone functionality you could certainly use it as such in a pinch.  Still, the Mini 5 really shines when it comes to media consumption and internet access.

Archos 5 Internet Tablet gets Android 1.6 Donut with firmware v1.6.08 [Update: it’s been pulled]

Archos have released a new firmware update for the Archos 5 Internet Tablet, v1.6.08, and the key change is the introduction of Android 1.6 "Donut".  With the new version of the OS comes the quick-search box for the MID/PMP's homescreen, improved power management, native WVGA display support and VPN functionality; Archos have also tweaked media handling, so that the Archos 5 Internet Tablet better supports H.264 SD and HD videos.

Update: Strangely, all mention of the update - including the firmware itself - has been pulled from Archos' site.

Archos 5 Internet Tablet gets firmware update; Mini Dock demo [Video]

It's been a rainstorm of Archos 5 Internet Tablet newness over at UMPC Portal today, with our friend Steve Paine taking delivery not only of the Archos 5 Mini Dock but the latest firmware which has also released today, v1.3.07.  Together they've taken the Android-based Archos 5 even closer into MID status: USB host support means that you can plug a full-sized keyboard and mouse into the Mini Dock's USB port, while the new firmware now supports full-screen YouTube HD playback together with outputting that content, via HDMI, onto your TV.

Don’t Do It Dell: Think Tablets, Not MIDs

Don’t Do It Dell: Think Tablets, Not MIDs

It looks like Dell is planning to release a mobile internet device, or a MID. The details are few and far between but the product—code-named Streak—looks like it packs Wi-Fi, 3G and Android 2.0 all into one. It is exactly what Intel has been calling a mobile internet device for the past few years: larger than a smartphone, primarily for accessing the Net, and featuring multimedia and even GPS functionality. The Archos 5 Internet Tablet and the leaked video of the Dell device gives us a better glimpse of what is to come and what it can do. Ironically (and you will see why later), when I watched the video I immediately thought: ah, so Dell wants to make an iPhone with a larger 5-inch screen!

Wallet MID gets closer to release, US launch possible

Looking strikingly like the mysterious Android MID we've been seeing so much of lately, this is actually eviGroup's upcoming Wallet MID.  First tipped back in May and promised for a launch by the end of 2009, the touchscreen handheld has been described by the French company's CEO as a "unit halfway between a cellphone and a TabletPC with a 5-inch screen", though right now it's unknown whether it uses an Intel x86 CPU with Windows OS or a frugal ARM chipset with 7+ hours runtime and custom OS.

Archos Android Internet Tablet event announced for September 15th

As promised, Archos have announced that they will be holding a press conference on September 15th where star of the show will be their new Android Internet Tablet.  The company has also launched AppsLib, a new directory for developers and the Android apps they create for "high-end Android devices"; that site lists development guidelines for the touchscreen device as using a 5-inch WVGA display, with 720p video support, an HDMI output and native OpenGL libraries.
