FireCore Brings Last.fm and Web Browser to Hacked AppleTV [Video]

FireCore Brings Last.fm and Web Browser to Hacked AppleTV [Video]

If you got yourself an AppleTV, you knew what you were buying: a device that had one, and only one thing to do: stream media. You get your videos, movies, and music, but other than that, you're left with a big gaping hole in the features set. But, obviously the hacking community believes there's some room for improvement, and so they've managed to take the time and bring some new features to the AppleTV product.

iTunes & AppleTV updates adds Genius, bug-fixes

iTunes & AppleTV updates adds Genius, bug-fixes

Apple has quietly updated both iTunes and AppleTV overnight, introducing mainly bug-fixes for both products but also adding Genius intelligent playlist creation to their set-top box.  The iTunes update, which takes the app to v8.0.1, cures a particularly annoying bug whereby high-definition episodes of TV shows were replaced with standard-definition copies.

AppleTV gets new role as in-car entertainment

AppleTV gets new role as in-car entertainment

"Here in my car" Gary Numan crooned, "I feel safest of all - I can lock all my doors, it's the only way to live... in cars."  Wise words from the 80s wastrel, and I'm sure he'd approve even more of the jalopy lifestyle if his ride had a built in AppleTV.  The handiwork of mod-maestro Brandon Holland, it's a custom mounting of the hard-drive-blessed media device together with a 7-inch flip-out LCD, all squashed inside his 1990 Eagle Talon.

Archos’ AppleTV rival looks impressive

Archos’ AppleTV rival looks impressive

After seeing - and being instantly bored by - Philips rather "me too!" facsimile of the AppleTV, it's nice to see that we can rely on Archos for some decent competition.  Their TV+ unit turns up its nose at a paltry 40GB hard-drive and instead whacks up to 500GB in there (other options are 80GB and 250GB), coupling that storage with HDMI, RGB inputs & outputs, WiFi and wired ethernet, USB and support for 720p.

Philips tentative answer to AppleTV’s streaming media

Philips tentative answer to AppleTV’s streaming media

I'm not going to make the obvious "borrowing of industrial design" comment, but Philips partially-unveiled answer to the AppleTV looks to be sticking a little too closely to established media streamer form for my liking.  Inside the brushed-aluminium box is a 40GB hard-drive, while you can plug in larger hard-drives round the back, as well HDMI, optical audio and a WiFi connection hidden inside.

Strip me and ogle me: AppleTV unboxed

Strip me and ogle me: AppleTV unboxed

Those crafty brutes over at Gizmodo have roughly stripped a new AppleTV unit of its slick packaging and - just to really drive the embarrassment home - they've photographed the whole damn trauma.  Frankly, while pleasantly enough designed, it's not exactly the most eye-stunning of gadgets; there's only so much visual magic you can confer with a silver slab.

No AppleTV in February

No AppleTV in February

It's official, the AppleTV won't be shipping until mid March. So let the wheels of the rumor mill start churning. Why is it delayed?

Could it be manufacturing issues? Maybe they're going to release Leopard around mid March as well. I doubt that these are the case, but with Apple, you can't ever be sure.

Lets just hope that they don't follow suit with the iPhone. We can barely wait until June for it.

No Apple TV set this year

No Apple TV set this year

This week it’s been tipped that Apple’s media content parters - or prospective parters - for the Apple TV are "dragging their heels." This means no Apple TV release inside of the year 2014, and it means the Apple TV box that’s already on the market will stay there.
