The iPad’s dominance in the tablet market took a hit this past fourth quarter as Google’s Android powered tablets jumped from 2.3 percent of tablets shipped up to 22 percent. Apple’s iPad dropped from 95 percent to 75 percent in the quarter, said market researcher Strategy Analytics.

Today there's been quite the outpouring of yahoos and woops for the release of Apple's first quarter results which showed a growth in revenue by 71 percent and an earnings growth of 78 percent. Wowzers. Not only that, but iPads alone sold 7.33 million, that's MILLION during this past quarter. That's a lot, if you don't already know. This might very well be because of the apparent lack of competition in tablet-based computers on the market. Today in the accompanying sales call with Apple, COO Tim Cook took time to respond to a question on competition, and his words were sharply put.

Whether iPad-inspired or just coincidental, it sounds like Google aren't content to leave the tablet market to Apple.  While devices like the Notion Ink Adam and ICD Gemini will both run Android, according to the NYT Google are planning an own-brand tablet; CEO Eric Schmidt has apparently been boasting about the Android-based Google tablet at a recent party, and sources with "direct knowledge of the project" reckon the search giant has been quietly working on media content deals including magazines and newspapers.  Meanwhile, there's also talk of a second HP tablet, with a six-inch touchscreen.

Apple rumored to be working on another larger tablet, possibly based on Mac OS X

Those wanting to get their hands on an iPad have a 60 day wait starting from last Thursday, but  a rumor has surfaced that Apple is said to be developing a more advanced tablet model.  The new model is said to be much larger in dimensions, and more likely to run software akin to Mac OS X instead of the iPhone OS.  Oh, and it would launch within the year.  iPad buyers may possibly want to wait this out.

It almost seems churlish to throw out another Apple iPad tablet rumor so early on a Monday morning, but now even analytics companies are getting in on the hype machine. Flurry - who track app usage - have pushed out an excitable blog entry claiming to have spotted fifty prototype Apple devices accessing 200 different apps, with use beginning back in October but increasing dramatically this month. "Apple appears to be going through its cycle of testing and polish," reckons Peter Farago, Flurry's VP of marketing, "which is expected from any hardware or software company as it nears launch."

Piece together all the Apple iPad tablet rumors, supposed-leaks and speculation and you'd end up with a Frankenstein's monster of a device, one capable of hypnotizing the whole blogosphere ahead of Apple's press conference next Wednesday.  Latest to throw their oar in is iLounge, who reckon they have the scoop on two hardware details for the touchscreen slate.  Most curious is the suggestion - so their source claims - that the iPad will have dual dock connectors.
