iCloud costing Apple up to $150m to charm labels?

Apple's new iCloud service may cost users $25/year - after a whet-your-appetite free trial - according to the latest rumors, but the company itself has reportedly had to open its wallet a whole lot wider in order to keep the labels happy. As well as what's said to be between a 58- and 70-percent share of iCloud music revenue, Apple has apparently agreed to between $100m and $150m in advance payments to the big four labels.

Apple: App subscription system announcement “soon”

Apple VP of internet services Eddy Cue took the stage with Rupert Murdoch today to announce The Daily, and has confirmed that publishers can expect to "hear an announcement from us soon" as to when they might be able to access the same subscription model as unveiled today. The Daily will use a new recurring billing system, offering weekly payments of $9.99 for seven issues, or $39.99 for a year's access.

Apple denies new in-app purchase rule; Devs must enforce it by June 30?

Apple has denied updating the App Store rules regarding in-app purchases - and which Sony fell foul of with their Reader for iPhone app - claiming instead that it is merely enforcing a rule that has been in the guidelines for some time. "We have not changed our developer terms or guidelines," Apple spokesperson Trudy Muller told AllThingsD. "We are now requiring that if an app offers customers the ability to purchase books outside of the app, that the same option is also available to customers from within the app with in-app purchase."

Magazine Publishers Still Seeking Recurring Application Subscriptions for the iPad

Right now, the current state of magazine subscriptions, or lack there of, is a pressing matter for major publishers making their magazines and other periodicals available through Apple's App Store for download. While sales for magazines started off well, it's been noted that their sales are starting to drop off, and the fact that there's no recurring subscription pricing available for these periodicals is being attributed as the main cause. But now that The Daily --the iPad-specific daily periodical from News Corp.-- is being rumored to be delayed because of the recurring application subscription feature, publishers are starting to wonder when they will be able to utilize the same feature.

Apple banning publishers from bundled iPad subscriptions?

Apple is reportedly pushing stronger limitations on iPad newspaper and magazine access, which will prevent publishers from offering bundled paper and digital subscriptions. According to NRC, Apple's intent is to prevent subscription deals which bypass their own App Store purchase system: newspapers would no longer be allowed to offer inclusive iPad access to content as part of a paper subscription.

iOS 4.3 due Dec 13 with News Corp “Daily” recurring subscription APIs?

Apple's iOS 4.2 has only been officially available since Monday, but already talk has turned to its successor, iOS 4.3. According to MacStories' sources, Apple has been planning to launch iOS 4.3 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch on December 13, complete with a new set of APIs supporting recurring subscriptions for App Store apps. These APIs they, and Daring Fireball's Jon Gruber suggest, will be unveiled on December 9 in a joint-event with News Corp, potentially even seeing CEO Rupert Murdoch join Steve Jobs on stage to officially announce the "Daily" digital newspaper.
