While that’s not exactly smartphone-level performance, the Apple Watch isn’t sporting a smartphone-level battery. With 18-hour battery life, it will likely appeal to more of us.

Android takes one last pre-event swipe at Apple Watch

Android takes one last pre-event swipe at Apple Watch

In the hours before the Apple Watch event today, Google released a video which suggests to users that they "Wear what you want." They refer, of course, to the Android Wear collection of smartwatches, being made by multiple different manufacturers and created in several different styles. Square or Circular, they show, Android Wear is made to fit many different sorts of fashions and looks. How this will compete with Apple's tried-and-true "one device to rule them all" sort of approach, we'll just have to wait and see.

Apple Watch Edition contains new “Apple gold”

Apple Watch Edition contains new “Apple gold”

Apple is the sort of company to be so obsessive about the devices they create that they'd make their own type of metal to perfect them. That's what they do. They've already done it. Apple uses cold-forged steel in one iteration of their new Apple Watch. According to Jony Ive, they're also bringing their own specially-prepared gold to the smartwatch as well. Not that this new gold is anything you'd need a new magical alchemy to concoct - this is just a matter of preparation and process.

Apple Watch has hidden diagnostics port (for now)

Some interesting news about the Apple Watch has surfaced today, all of it revolving around a hidden diagnostic port available on the Apple smartwatch. This diagnostic port is said to contain a 6-dot brass contact array, which is inside of the bottom strap's connector slot groove. Sources have confirmed this port exists, but that's where the agreement among sources seems to end: one source has said that the port is used for diagnostic tasks (as you'd expect), but that it could theoretically be used for accessories after the watch launches. This has spurred speculation about so-called smart watch straps, but a different source has surfaced saying not to get your hopes up.
