Apple awarded patent for iPhone headset ala Gear VR

Apple awarded patent for iPhone headset ala Gear VR

It seems like almost everyone is getting on the VR trend these days. Surprisingly, even Apple seems to be game, or at least considered the possibility. The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) just granted Cupertino a patent for a "Head-Mounted Display Apparatus for Retaining a Portable Electronic Device with Display". Or to keep it short, a Samsung Gear VR-like accessory but powered by the iPhone instead. Is Apple now jumping on the virtual reality bandwagon? Probably not yet, but at least the legal groundwork has been established.

Samsung demands NVIDIA sales ban in patent retort

Samsung demands NVIDIA sales ban in patent retort

Samsung has shown it's not afraid to chase big legal injunctions when it believes its patents are at stake, and now it's NVIDIA facing a US sales block at the hands of the South Korean firm. A complaint filed on Friday asks the US International Trade Commission to shut down sales of NVIDIA's graphics chips, alleging they infringe Samsung's own intellectual property. As with Apple, however, Samsung didn't actually pull the trigger first: it was NVIDIA which kicked off this particular war.

NVIDIA responds to Samsung’s “false advertising” claim

NVIDIA responds to Samsung’s “false advertising” claim

It is a well known legal tactic, especially between companies, for one to fight back a lawsuit with a countersuit. So when NVIDIA sued Samsung and Qualcomm last September, in what it claims to be the first patent suit it has ever filed, it fully expected Samsung to hit back with a suit of its own, which it did this week. But what it didn't expect was for Samsung, in the same lawsuit, to accuse NVIDIA of falsely advertising its Tekgra K1 as "the world's fastest mobile processor".

LG, Google ink 10-year patent licensing agreement

LG, Google ink 10-year patent licensing agreement

If you're tired of hearing patent squabbles left and right (though we haven't actually heard from Apple and Samsung recently), then this might come as a refreshing change. LG and Google have announced that they have reached a long-term cross-licensing agreement that will let both companies take a peek and use the other's portfolio of patents. Conversely, it also protects both from lawsuits that involve each others patents, leaving them free to work on their products and technologies, most likely ones surrounding Android and smart devices, without fear of litigation.

Patent troll’s claim over screen rotation gets nullified

Patent troll’s claim over screen rotation gets nullified

Apparently somebody owns, or claims to own, that auto rotate feature you may have grown to love and hate on your smartphone. And surprisingly, it is neither Apple nor Samsung but a patent troll. Fortunately for the mobile world, the USPTO has just declared Patent No. 6,326,978 or "Display method for selectively rotating windows on a computer display" as invalid, in no small part thanks to the efforts of open cloud computing company Rackspace.

Samsung to appeal: Apple accused of omitting evidence

Samsung to appeal: Apple accused of omitting evidence

Samsung will fight the $120m damages a US court ruled it must pay Apple, the South Korean firm has insisted, accusing its rival of omitting "real world evidence" that would have proved Samsung's innocence. The San Jose court found in Apple's favor late last week, with a jury deeming Samsung guilty of patent infringement with its Galaxy series of phones among other products, though awarded the iPhone maker a fraction of the cash it was demanding.
