The iPhone 5 crowd could help Apple Maps find its way

The iPhone 5 crowd could help Apple Maps find its way

Every Apple launch has a sting in the tail, and for iPhone 5 and iOS 6 it's Maps. Ditching Google Maps and instead turning to a self-made alternative makes sense in terms of longevity, but it meant hitting reset on what had come to be relied upon as a solid and predictable user experience. Apple was going to have to take a PR hit at some point, there was no escaping it. The step back in detail from Google Maps, which has had years of refinement, to the first-gen Maps app of iOS 6, is unavoidably obvious, particularly to those outside of US cities.

Nokia takes a shot at poorly-received Apple Maps app

Today, Apple's new Maps app in iOS 6 has been the subject of a lot of criticism. Some iOS 6 users aren't exactly satisfied with Apple's attempt at entering the navigation space, and Nokia has jumped on the opportunity to talk about its own suite of navigation tools offered to its users. Apple Maps spotted for OS X desktop use

Apple's next-level GPS mapping and 3D exploration app has been spotted in the code for the beta launch of iOS 6 with an indicator that it'll be working with OS X soon. Have a peek at some XML right here and see if you can see what the developer sees.

Google Maps preempts Apple Maps with 3D Tour Guide

This week at Google Maps' Next Dimension special event we got to see how powerful Google's world of mapping has really become with a full 3D vision of the world in a much more visually pleasing way than we've ever seen before. This talk started with a brief history of the 3D world, starting all the way back in 2003 when the 3D vision was nothing more than a whisper, while 2008 started with a bang with some "3D" images with flat, nearly-real images for arial views. This new version of Google Maps has airplanes capturing Oblique Images as captured from several sides as the plans overhead - this is just the first step.

HERE Maps hands-on: Google & Apple should be worried

HERE Maps hands-on: Google & Apple should be worried

For a long time, Nokia HERE Maps has been Windows Phone's secret ace card. The quiet star of Lumia - and perhaps the most interesting part of Nokia now that Microsoft has its phone division - the app's free offline navigation and comprehensive traffic data service has made it a hit among users. Now liberated from its Windows Phone blinkers, though, the HERE team has spread its sights to include Android and iOS, slipping us a beta version of the app for Samsung's Galaxy smartphones to try out ahead of the full release.
