AT&T activate 3.2m iPhones in Q2 2010; Apple to blitz iPad/iPhone 4 waiting lists this weekend?

There's no doubting that there has been huge demand for the iPhone 4 and the iPad, and that Apple are having trouble keeping both devices in stock.  AT&T has just announced activation figures for the new iPhone 4, and preorder sales were a whopping ten times higher than those of the iPhone 3GS a year ago.  Meanwhile, BGR has heard that Apple is ramping up for a barnstorming weekend where it will try to work through the "Priority Lists" of customers waiting for either an iPhone 4 or an iPad.

FaceTime to use Apple ID & email for iPod touch & iPad users?

Details on how Apple will apparently handle FaceTime video calls to devices such as the iPod touch, iPad and desktop systems which lack a phone number have leaked to BGR.  According to their "reliable" source, users will register their Apple ID to their device and then associate one or more email addresses to that ID; making a call will therefore be as simple as choosing the email address of your contact.

Nokia, Apple and a whole heap of hyperbole

Nokia, Apple and a whole heap of hyperbole

Nokia's new head of Mobile Solutions (the division of the Finnish company dedicated to smartphones and mobile computers) Anssi Vanjoki has come out fighting this week, promising "killer smartphones", "game-changing products" and the sort of "battle" that fanboys have been crying out for over the past couple of years. You could well argue that his counterpart at Nokia's Mobile Phones division has an easier job of it, taking on the more mundane grist of what's still the biggest cellphone company worldwide (and getting handset-hungry developing markets to cater to). Vanjoki gets a tired portfolio of devices with only the N8 a glimmer on the horizon (and that, a crueller person might add, runs an already tired OS) and the challenge of rivalling the best in Android, iOS and webOS in what has become perhaps the fastest changing segment in consumer electronics. That's a pretty hefty to-do list, so what should be his plan of attack, where does the N8 fit into it, and - in a week of iPhone 4 contention - what lessons could Apple be learning from the Finns' fall from grace?

Recent Jobs iPhone 4 emails fake says Apple PR

Recent Jobs iPhone 4 emails fake says Apple PR

Apple PR's Steve Downling has denied to Fortune that yesterday's supposed email exchange between an irate customer and CEO Steve Jobs is authentic.  The conversation - in which Jobs was alleged to have told the iPhone 4 owner that Apple was "working" on a fix for the persistent antenna issue many users have reported - is now the subject of some controversy, with BGR (who initially reported the issue) posting screenshots of the email headers they were sent by their tipster.

Apple Planning Cloud-Based iTunes and Wireless Sync for Devices

Apple Planning Cloud-Based iTunes and Wireless Sync for Devices

There's been a lot of rumors about iTunes heading into the cloud. And with that in mind, there's just as many rumors talking about iTunes offering some kind of streaming service as well -- and not just for music. And if there's plenty of rumors circling, two things can happen: they'll either go down the drain and disappear forever, or actually turn into something. If a tipster talking to Boy Genius Report is any indicator, then it looks like iTunes is about to go through some changes.

iPhone 4 class-action filed: alleges Apple and AT&T negligent and deceptive

iPhone 4 class-action filed: alleges Apple and AT&T negligent and deceptive

Apple has been stuck with their first class-action suit over the iPhone 4, with two individuals citing the company - along with AT&T - as guilty of general negligence, in breach of implied warranty for merchantability and fitness for purpose, and of negligent misrepresentation and fraud by concealment (among other things).  Filed in the Maryland district court yesterday, the suit basically alleges that Apple and AT&T knowingly sold a smartphone that "drops calls and data service when used in a manner consistent with normal wireless phone use" and which they are "unable to return ... without incurring a substantial restocking fee."

Leaked AppleCare memo: iPhone 4 signal is normal so no free Bumpers

Leaked AppleCare memo: iPhone 4 signal is normal so no free Bumpers

Apple may be reasonably upfront about the iPhone 4's so-called "death grip" position, where holding the smartphone in the lower-left corner leads to noticeable signal degradation, but that doesn't mean they're going to start "appeasing" users.  Despite having suggested that their Bumper cases can address the issue, a leaked internal memo to AppleCare staff makes it very clear that a free case is not on the cards.  Instead, employees are supposed to point out that the iPhone 4 has better reception than its predecessors, and that every cellphone has signal issues depending on how you hold it.
