This week Apple's head of design Jonathan Ive has been knighted at Buckingham Palace by Princesse Anne for his services in design and enterprise. In an interview with The Telegraph on the subject of his new knighthood as well as on his design philosophy, he let loose several talking points worth noting, including on the subject of future projects. Stephen Elop is a Genius

, Apr 19th 2012 Discuss [0]

It’s easy to hate on Nokia. The company’s ruinous financial results have seen the Finnish firm’s share price hit a fifteen year low; reviewers responded positively to the new Lumia Windows Phone range, but smartphone-savvy customers were still swayed by more established Android and iPhone options. And so it’s easy to hate on CEO Stephen Elop, a cuckoo to some who inveigled his way into Nokia and then sold out the family silver – Symbian, MeeGo, the old guard of loyal execs – from under their nose. As the stock tumbles and the company contracts, though, make no mistake: Elop is no bumbling fool.

New iPad: The Skeptic’s Review

, Mar 22nd 2012 Discuss [0]

I sent back the iPad 2, but I’m keeping the new iPad. Two years ago I wrote my first iPad skeptic’s review, a more oblique – and personal – opinion on Apple’s tablet than the traditional SlashGear review. A year later I did the same for the iPad 2, finding it improved but, from a combination of hardware and software, not sufficient of an upgrade for my needs to justify keeping it. Now Apple is up to its third-generation tablet, criticized by some as another “minor” refresh but in fact a considerable step up in the overall user-experience.

Airway AirPlay speakers are almost genius

, Feb 17th 2012 Discuss [0]

Apple's AirPlay system promises easier music streaming from your iPhone or iPad, and for a moment it seemed Systemline's Airway in-ceiling AirPlay-enabled speakers might be the best way of using it. Simple enough for DIY installation, the stereo speakers offer minimal visual clutter with Sonos-style remote control from your iOS gadget; unfortunately, it seems Systemline didn't go the whole hog and make the Airway speakers entirely self-contained. Apple headed to Harrods

, Jan 20th 2012 Discuss [0]

Luxury London retailer Harrods is reportedly next in line to get an Apple Store in among its regular shelves, with sources at the famous toff shop saying Apple's pale wooden benches will soon be nestling in among the 1m square foot showfloor. The new section is set to be larger than the oasis of Apple currently found at Best Buy and, soon, Target9to5Mac reports, though will still lack a Genius Bar for technical support.
