Apple reportedly moving chip production away from Samsung

Apple and Samsung, as many of you already know, have not had the most civil of professional relationships. Samsung has long been a provider of hardware for Apple products, but with the recent high-profile patent suit between the two, it seems that relationship has soured a bit. New reports from CNET and Taiwan Economic News (via MacRumors) are claiming that Apple is looking to move away from Samsung when it comes to the chips for its products, instead striking a deal Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and having that company produce quad-core processors for future devices.

It would appear that if indeed Apple is going to show a new iPad mini inside the next few weeks, it'll be released right alongside a new iPad (3rd gen) as well, complete with A6 processing power under the hood. A developer has discovered in their standard Apple developer's logs that a brand new iPad - designation iPad 3,6 - pointing towards a modified version of the latest iPad on the market today. This release would come alongside an iPad mini at an iTunes-centered event inside October.

Apple has introduced the A6 chip for their next-generation iPhone 5 hardware this afternoon at the event which also showed off several more impressive bits of hardware and software enhancements. The iPhone 5's A6 chip has been touted as having 2x faster CPU performance than the previous chip and brings on 2x the graphics performance as well. This chip has been shown as bringing on launches of apps at nearly 2x the speed as the previous iPhone on the whole.

Apple slashes Samsung’s iPhone 5 involvement says supply chain

Samsung's memory and displays will be absent from the first batch of Apple's new iPhone, insiders claim, after pricing and legal disagreements saw the Cupertino firm slash orders from its long-time rival. Patent fight tensions and arguments over costs have led to a stalemate of sorts, insiders tell Reuters and Bloomberg, though Apple is also believed to be working to reduce its reliance on any one individual company. However, Apple hasn't been able to entirely oust Samsung from its iPhone 5 supply chain: the processor powering the new smartphone will apparently still be produced by the South Korean firm.

Apple using Waze data in new iOS 6 Maps

TomTom spilled the beans in a press release yesterday, saying that Apple had licensed part of its mapping solutions and information for use in the new Maps app in iOS 6. Details about exactly what is being used has been intentionally left vague. How about the crowd sourced data that Apple was keen to promote at the keynote? Turns out it could be coming from Waze, a navigation app that provides crowd sourced traffic data from via user interaction.
