Apple A6X revealed: New flagship chip

Apple A6X revealed: New flagship chip

Apple has unveiled its latest mobile chipset, the Apple A6X, replacing the already-capable A6 in the third-gen iPad, and doubling performance compared to the A5X along the way. The new chipset, a custom SoC using ARM cores, delivers not only that 2x CPU grunt but doubled graphics performance too. It's the new chipset at the heart of the 4th-generation iPad.

Quadcore Apple A6 support found in iOS 5.1 beta

Quadcore Apple A6 support found in iOS 5.1 beta

Apple's iOS has already been tweaked to accommodate quadcore processors, software digging has discovered, with mention of the four-core chipsets found in the latest iOS 5.1 beta. A hidden panel within the beta discloses which processors iOS 5.1 is set up to handle, 9 to 5 Mac reports, with a reference to "/cores/core.3" indicating two more than we've seen so far in a commercially-launched iPhone, iPod or iPad. The discovery follows speculation resurfacing earlier today that Apple intends to launch not one but two new iPad models this year, with a significantly upgraded iPad 4 due in October.

Samsung keeps Apple A6 contract despite TSMC bid says exec

Samsung keeps Apple A6 contract despite TSMC bid says exec

Reports that Apple would ditch Samsung and look instead to TSMC for the Apple A6 processor expected to feature in the next-gen iPad 3 and iPhone 5 are premature, a Samsung exec has insisted, claiming that the two companies will continue to collaborate on chipset design and manufacture. While multiple sources had suggested TSMC had snatched the production contract out from under Samsung, as Apple supposedly distanced itself from over-reliance on its courtroom foe, issues around manufacturing have apparently left Apple still dependent on Samsung The Korea Times reports.

TSMC wins Apple A6 and A7 contract tips insider: Samsung dumped

TSMC wins Apple A6 and A7 contract tips insider: Samsung dumped

Apple's A6 and A7 processor production will indeed shift to TSMC, sources claim, as the company continues to distance itself from Samsung Electronics. The two firms have recently signed a foundry partnership agreement, DigiTimes reports, which will see the next-gen Apple A6 chipset and its successor, unofficially dubbed the Apple A7, produced using TSMC's 28nm and 20nm processes. Apple has until now relied on Samsung to produce the chips found in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4, co-developing the original A4 with the Korean company. However, increasingly strained relations and a number of ongoing legal battles have supposedly prompted Apple to look elsewhere for some of its components.

Apple A6 tipped ready for primetime (in iPad 3?) come Q2 2012

Apple A6 tipped ready for primetime (in iPad 3?) come Q2 2012

Apple's new A6 processor could be ready for public debut as early as Q2 2012, new reports suggest, with TSMC again tipped to be in trial production of the new ARM-based silicon. According to CENS' industry sources, the design of the Apple A6 is expected to be taped out in Q1 next year, using 28nm production processes and innovative 3D stacking construction. If the timescales are correct, the iPad 3 - which rumors suggest will use the A6 SoC - could arrive later in the year than the iPad 2 did, constrained by the production availability of the CPU.

3D Apple A6 CPU tipped amid iPhone 5 overheat reports

3D Apple A6 CPU tipped amid iPhone 5 overheat reports

Apple's A6 processor could beat Intel to the market for 3D IC chip construction, using the complex layering system so as to avoid overheating issues of the sort supposedly threatening to delay the next-gen iPhone and the current Apple A5 processor. According to EETimes, a Taiwanese report claims TSMC will be producing 3D 28nm chips by the end of the year which, SemiWiki says, can see performance boosted by around 30-percent while power consumption drops by around 50-percent. That will also add up to reduced heat output.

Apple A6 chip in test production as TSMC eyes Samsung’s job

Apple A6 chip in test production as TSMC eyes Samsung’s job

Apple has reportedly green-lighted a production trial of Apple A6 next-gen processors by TSMC, amid ongoing rumors that the Cupertino company intends to dump Samsung as a component supplier as son as it can. According to Reuters' source, whether TSMC scoops the valuable contract will be down to what chip yield it can manage: if the proportion of defect-free A6 processors produced meets with Apple's liking, the company is expected to grant a formal contract.

Apple in 28nm A6X trial run with TSMC as Samsung faces chip contract loss

Apple in 28nm A6X trial run with TSMC as Samsung faces chip contract loss

Apple's attempts to extricate itself from reliance on Samsung components continue, with titters from Taiwan that TSMC will begin trial production of the Apple A6X chip (found in the latest iPad with Retina) ahead of a bid for the next-gen A7 contract. The test will kick off in Q1 2013, The China Times reports, with TSMC producing a new, 28nm version of the existing 32nm A6X that Samsung has been producing for the full-sized iPad 4th-gen; the smaller chip, which will likely be more power efficient as well, will debut in a new iPad 5th-gen and iPad mini 2.
