Apple: Antenna Problem is Real, Offers Free Cases

Time to stop the speculation. Over the course of the last 22 days, we've heard from every angle of the Internet that the iPhone 4 is plagued with reception issues. And, throughout those days, we've heard all sorts of reasons: it's the antenna, it's the software, it's the way you're holding it. Maybe it's even your face. Or, it's a combination of all of those things, jumbled into one big issue that no one could figure out why the new iPhone was suffering from. Well, we can finally say that we've got an answer, and it's straight from Steve Jobs himself. The antenna is the best antenna they've ever created, but it does have a flaw -- just like every other smartphone on the planet.

New Apple TV using cloud streaming rather than local downloads?

New Apple TV using cloud streaming rather than local downloads?

Continued leaks suggest Apple are giving their Apple TV set-top box more attention, with NewTeeVee claiming to have heard from sources that the Cupertino company is planning to put more emphasis on renting and streaming content rather than downloading it.  Their sources say Apple is negotiating a $0.99 TV episode rental model, which would work in a similar fashion to iTunes movie rentals, while content sales would be stored in a user's cloud space and streamed rather than downloaded to the local device.

iPhone 4 overheating: is your Apple handset toasty?

Back in the aftermath of the iPad launch, various users taking their new tablets out into the wild found the Apple slate could be quite cautious about overheating in the sun.  Now we're wondering if the same thing could be happening with the iPhone 4; HardMac found their iPhone 4's thermal protection - which basically locks you out of the phone until it decides it has cooled sufficiently - kicked in when the handset was in an otherwise cool room.

iPhone 4 orders cancelled by AT&T and Apple for the second time?

The iPhone 4 launch headache continues, with a second batch of supposedly cancelled handset orders.  After reports last week that AT&T had sent out emails telling iPhone 4 buyers that their orders had been declined - which the carrier explained as "balancing" out those who had accidentally double-ordered as the stock systems went into meltdown - both Gizmodo and Engadget have been inundated by another wave of messages from both AT&T and Apple saying they were "unable to complete the authorization process for your iPhone order" and that "as a result, we had to cancel your iPhone order."

No iPhone 4 microSIM swapping with iPad 3G confirms Apple

As they're the only two devices right now that really use the smaller microSIM format, it comes as a shame to hear Apple confirm that swapping the cards between the iPhone 4 and iPad WiFi + 3G won't be possible.  According to the Apple UK FAQ for the iPhone 4, while the smartphone is provided - in the UK - unlocked and SIM-free, "your iPad microSIM card will not work with your iPhone."

Apple’s latest iPhone 4 innovation [Updated with video]

Apple’s latest iPhone 4 innovation [Updated with video]

Apple once again has built and delivered the most advanced mobile device in the market. Steve Jobs, during his interview at the Wall St. Journal conference last week, mentioned that his companies passion was to build the best products around and in this analyst’s opinion they have again set the bar by which other mobile phones will be judged.

This doesn’t mean that other competitors won’t catch up or include key innovations of their own, however for the time being the iPhone 4 and the newly named iOS4 is packed with innovation useful for everyday consumers and tech enthusiasts alike.
It may be easy for many people within the press - including the Apple naysayers - to look at today’s announcements and complain that there was anything truly innovative announced. Statements like these miss the broader picture of not only what Apple is doing but what Apple is doing for the technology industry at large. That being said, I want to highlight several things that require a deeper look.
