Android MID spotted again; cavorts with Archos PMP and SmartQ 7

The Android MID mystery continues, with more images of the compact touchscreen slate showing up at various forums.  We're now up to our third batch of leaked images - the first and second batches appeared over the past week or so - with the device being pegged as anything from Apple's upcoming tablet (highly unlikely) to Arcos' much-talked-about MID, but with no official identity forthcoming at least the source of the pictures has seemingly been confirmed.

Archos launching Android 3G PMP on June 11th?

Archos launching Android 3G PMP on June 11th?

Archos have announced a press event to be held on June 11th in Paris, France.  While there's no actual written confirmation of what the event might be about, the shadowy PMP/MID device visible on the invite and the bright green color-scheme has led to speculation that it concerns Archos' Android-based Internet Media Tablet (IMT) phone.

The company announced that they would be developing an Android device back in February, with the IMT measuring just 10mm thick and having a 5-inch high resolution touchscreen.  Connectivity will include not only WiFi, like existing PMPs from Archos, but 3.5G HSUPA/HSDPA for up to 7.2Mbps downloads.

Oversized iPod touch PMP/tablet hybrid tipped ahead of iPad 3

Steve Jobs may have dismissed 7-inch slates as "tweeners", but that doesn't mean the company isn't considering an oversized iPod touch according to the latest batch of rumors. Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims Apple is working on a "big iPod touch" with a screen size of around 5-inches, AppleInsider reports, likely with the same resolution as the current model and offering the same PMP UI rather than the iPad UI.

France wants tablet-tax for iPad and Android slates while Windows exempt

France wants tablet-tax for iPad and Android slates while Windows exempt

French legislators are considering imposing a tablet-tax that would affect all models with at least 40GB of internal storage, though Windows-based slates would be exempt. The proposal, reported by Numerama, is part of French "private copy" taxation which imposes extra fees on digital media like blank CDs, DVDs and thumb-drives; it's estimated it would add up to €12 ($16) to the cost of Apple's top-spec iPad or Android tablets. However, because Windows is classed as a "full" OS rather than a mobile one like iOS or Android, it escapes the taxation.
