PsiXpda planning Psion 5mx-style QWERTY Android MID

PsiXpda planning Psion 5mx-style QWERTY Android MID

PsiXpda, who you may remember channeled some classic Psion nostalgia for their UMPC in late 2009, is planning a second attempt on the companion device market with a design that sticks more faithfully to the fondly-remembered Series 5mx. Founder Paul Pinnock told Reghardware that, while the PsiXpda sold out its (admittedly tentative at just 2,000 units) production run, the new model will use Android and have a more imaginative form-factor.

Sharp IS01 Android MID hits US for $246

Sharp's 5-inch Android MID, the IS01, has finally made it to US shores, though it's not quite the perfect release we were hoping for.  Importer Conics are doing the honors, rather than Sharp itself: they've listed the clamshell handset for a mere $246, which gets you a 5-inch 960 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and twin cameras.

Buggy Sharp DoCoMo LYNX SH-10B Android MID sales frozen; only 7k bought in 2 months

Looks like NTT DoCoMo aren't having much luck with Sharp's LYNX SH-10B Android MID.  The company froze sales of the QWERTY handheld a week ago, after discovering a security loophole that could allow malicious software to harvest text, then settled on an update that apparently fixed the flaw and would let the carrier put the SH-10B back on sale from tomorrow.  Now that's changed again, with the discovery of a further bug in the MID.

Sharp DoCoMo LYNX SH-10B Android MID hits Japan this month

It looks like Sharp are playing the field when it comes to carrier partnerships for their IS01 Android-based MID.  Having already been picked up by Japanese network KDDI, a strikingly similar looking model has just been announced for NTT DoCoMo.  The DoCoMo LYNX SH-10B has a 5-inch touchscreen, full QWERTY keyboard and dual digital cameras - 5.3-megapixels on the outside, 4.3-megapixels on the inside - and runs Android.

Acorp EM501R super-cheap Android MID gets video demo

Acorp EM501R super-cheap Android MID gets video demo

Android tablets are gradually separating into two distinct lines: those from well-known manufacturers, who see the Google platform as a strong contender against Apple's newly-christened iOS, and low-cost OEMs and ODMs who choose it for its free distribution.  We're hoping the latter group will tip into a heap of super-cheap MIDs and slates on the market, and a reasonable example is the Acorp EM501R.  A 4.8-inch MID based on a 600MHz Rockchip ARM9 CPU, Acorp told ARMDevices they'll sell it at just $88 to distributors.

Eken M001 Android MID gets battery boost hack, video call webcam [Video]

Eken's M001 Android MID certainly had promise - a bargain price tag will do that - but the end result, particularly dire battery life, left us cold.  Still, that's nothing a little elbow grease, soldering and time investment won't address, and that's just what Carnivore from the Slatedroid forums has done.  His M001 now has a USB hub, two new full-sized USB ports, 8GB of integrated storage and - most impressively - a total 5,200mAh of battery good for 7-12hrs of runtime.
