AMD Fusion APUs get official: DirectX 11, 1080p HD & 10hr battery life

AMD has officially launched its Fusion APU series, a hybrid range of CPU/GPU chips incorporating both into a single die. Targeted at ultraportables, notebooks and netbooks, the new AMD E-Series "Zacate" and C-Series "Ontario" APUs each use the Bobcat CPU core, and AMD reckon they're capable of DirectX 11 graphics, UVD3 video acceleration, 1080p HD playback, 2D conversion to 3D and up to 10hrs battery life depending on system.

AMD Ontario ultraportable CPU set for Q4 2010 release

AMD's Ontario processor for ultraportables and netbooks should see a release in Q4 2010, according to company CEO Dirk Meyer.  Speaking after AMD's financial results call, which Seeking Alpha transcribed, Meyer confirmed that Ontario is now set to arrive "in the fourth quarter of this year, ahead of schedule"; the CPU couples the company's low-power Bobcat core with integrated DirectX 11 graphics.

We have been hearing talk from both AMD and Intel for a while now about CPUs that have integrated GPUs allowing a notebook to get graphics and processing power from one device rather than needing a separate CPU and GPU. AMD has revealed its Llano processor and the chipmaker is calling the device an application processor unit or APU rather than the CPU or GPU monikers we are used to in the computer world.

Welcome to Thursday evening, everyone. This afternoon we had a bunch of quarterly reports hit, and some were better than others. Google posted its quarterly report a little prematurely, a blunder that had a hand in driving down the price of the company's stock. Later on in the day, we heard from Microsoft, which managed to do pretty good in its first quarter. Sadly, AMD posted its results for quarter 3 just a little while ago, and things aren't looking too good for the company - in fact, it says that it will have to layoff around 15% of its workforce in an attempt to save some money.
