Amazon Fire TV Stick takes on Chromecast

Amazon Fire TV Stick takes on Chromecast

Amazon may have been a late entrant into the set-top box space, but that hasn't stopped it already pushing out a second model, with the Fire TV Stick taking a leaf out of Chromecast's playbook by slotting straight into a spare HDMI port behind your TV. Undercutting the original Fire TV box at $39 - though Prime members will, temporarily at least, get an even better deal than that - the stick promises 50-percent more power than Google's dongle as well as 1080p Full HD video and Dolby Digital Plus surround sound, together with three options for remote control.

Fire Phone bombs: Amazon takes $170 million writedown

Amazon is not having a great afternoon. After reporting an operating loss of $544 million this most recent quarter, Amazon is suggesting that one big reason they're headed into the hole is the Amazon Fire Phone. During their earnings conference call for investors, Amazon representatives suggested that they'd be taking a $170 million charge. This writedown would be "primarily related to Fire phone inventory" as well as "supplier commitment costs."

Amazon loses big, but the worst is yet to come

It's not looking especially good at Amazon right this minute for investors. While operating loss was $25 million USD in Amazon's Q3 of 2013, this quarter (one year later), they've reported operating loss at $544 million. Net loss, on the other hand, was $41 million at this time last year and $437 million this quarter. On a more positive side, Amazon introduced several new products this quarter and increased net sales 20% to $20.58 billion this quarter compared to $17.09 billion one year ago. It may be time for a fire sale, nonetheless.

The excitement around Google and HTC's newest Nexus 9 tablet is so great that some people just can't keep their hands off it, or keep those from showing up on the Internet. The new Nexus tablet isn't due out in a few weeks, but someone in Vietnam already got their hands on not one but two Nexus 9, in black and white colors, just to tease everyone else with a substantial number of photos. In the meantime, though, Amazon has already started the ball rolling.

Kobo to exit tablet market, sticking around with an app

There are a lot of Android tablets on the market. It’s a dizzying array of screens, processors, manufacturers, and price. One OEM is bowing out of the race, and will instead focus on a segment the tablet was unable to kill off entirely: eReaders. Kobo has announced they are focussing their efforts on the digital book, as well as software. The move toward eReaders aligns Kobo with their true passion, which is digital reading. Their software keeps them at home on the tablet you already own.

Amazon looking to open retail store in Manhattan

A lot of talk has been circulating about Google taking a page from the Apple book and creating their own retail space. With so many products in their arsenal, it makes sense to have an actual retail space for fans to try and buy. Their pop-up shops last year were half a step, but it seems Amazon may be going all-in on retail, picking up where Google left off. Sources now say Amazon will have an actual brick-and-mortar store this year.

HP 10 Plus Android tablet arrives as rumored

HP 10 Plus Android tablet arrives as rumored

This past summer rumbles surfaced stating HP had a trio of new tablets in the works, and among those three new tablets was one called the HP 10 Plus. That leak turned out to be true, and HP has introduced that Android tablet model with little (read: none) fanfare. The tablet has surfaced on Amazon, where it is still located -- whether it was supposed to launch and HP is just staying incredibly quiet about its arrival, or this was a premature launch, isn't known at this point.
