Amazon grabs ex-Windows Phone app chief amid Kindle phone chatter

A former Microsoft Windows Phone exec has jumped ship to Amazon, where he will head the retailer's Appstore efforts, lending further weight to rumors that the company plans a smartphone of its own. Apple, not Amazon, is Microsoft’s NOOK Motivation

Apple, not Amazon, is Microsoft’s NOOK Motivation

Barely was the e-ink dry on Microsoft and Barnes & Noble's $300m NOOK agreement when pundits were questioning the wisdom of adding Amazon to the software company's existing roster of big-name rivals. Microsoft is already under attack in mobile and computing, so the commentary went; throwing one of the biggest retailers around into the mixture was at best foolish and at worst evidence of Microsoft spreading itself thin when it needs to be extra lavish with its strokes. Amazon pursues authors, cuts out the publisher middleman

If you needed any more evidence that Amazon is building its own digital media empire, here it is. The New York Times reports that the online retail giant will publish over 120 books this quarter alone, both on its Kindle e-book platform and traditional physical copies. That puts it in the odd position of competing with some of its biggest suppliers, the traditional publishing houses that have been around for decades.

Amazon close to Palm buy claims HP insider

Amazon has been tipped as the latest potential suitor for what remains of Palm, with insider sources at HP claiming the mega-retailer is close to finalizing a deal. HP is reportedly looking to rid itself of Palm as soon as it can, VentureBeat's tipster tells them, and while there are apparently "a handful of contenders" interested, it's Amazon that's closest to handing over the cash. However, it's unclear from the leaks whether Amazon would be buying Palm's hardware business, the webOS platform, or both.
