Android as an operating system is a wide open environment ripe for modification by the likes of developers from all angles, including those from the group Paranoid Android. These folks have announced this week a release of a bit of code that'll allow 3rd party software makers to take advantage of the newest Google Android apps on the market, even for those Android builds not approved by Google. In effect, this is a setup Google would not approve of in and of itself as their whole profit model (for Android) is built around approving Android-toting devices for use with the Google Play app and media store.

HTC building Amazon phones for 2014 insiders claim

Amazon and HTC are partnering on the rumored "Kindle smartphone", a new report suggests, with the struggling phone manufacturer in talks around building as many as three handsets for the retail behemoth. Of the trio of unnamed devices, one is "at an advanced stage of development" - potential the device believed to be codenamed "Smith" - the FT [registration required] reports, though is still unlikely to launch until 2014 assuming Amazon sticks with its current roadmap.

Apple files ebook price-fix appeal

Apple has officially filed its appeal against the ebook trial verdict that saw it found guilty of colluding with publishers to artificially price-fix downloads. The filing, made to the US District Court in the Southern District of New York on October 3rd, sees Apple appealing not only the ruling but Judge Denise Cote's proposed injunctions, which included long-lasting restrictions on how it could negotiate media deals as well as forced monitoring by an external watchdog.

It's been confirmed this morning that Apple retail stores will be launching their first iPhone trade-in program today. This program will allow iPhone owners to bring in gently used iPhones to Apple retail locations to receive credit at the Apple store that'll be good for use in purchase of a new iPhone model. This trade-in program is said to be good only with a new cellular contract in-hand - that is, you can't just head in to an Apple store and expect to leave with an Apple gift card.
