Over the next week we’ll be reviewing Diablo III in a series of posts which explore the basics of the game from an outsider’s perspective. This first review shows what its like to play Diablo III from the beginning having only a rudimentary knowledge of what Diablo I and II were like and how the crossover hit World of Warcraft works in practice. Our first run begins with the character class “Monk” and takes on this world of demon fighting in a mostly visual sense.

After announcing that it was bringing Ivy Bridge to its M14X, M17X, and M18X models, Alienware is letting customers know that if they placed an order for one of these laptops before that news, and their order hasn't shipped yet, they'll be getting the new Intel CPU automatically, even though when they placed the order, it wasn't part of the product description. The company wants to avoid that feeling among customers who just barely missed out on the new upgrade.

Alienware has thrown Intel's new 3rd-gen Core i5 and i7 processors at its updated M14x, M17x and M18x notebooks, promising a roughly 20-percent boost in power from the new Ivy Bridge architecture. It's the second refresh for the trio of gaming laptops in under a month, with Intel slotting in new mSATA caching drives and boosted graphics in mid-March. The Alienware M11x will soon reach end of life, and although it was an interesting idea to try and pack as much power into a small footprint as possible, ultimately it didn’t gain much traction. That doesn’t seem to prevent others from walking down a similar path. Alienware's M11x 11.6-inch gaming ultraportable was conspicuous by its absence from the Dell-owned company's M14x, M17x and M18x refresh earlier today, and in fact there's bad news if you've been holding out for a pocket powerhouse. According to Alienware, there are no plans to update the M11x from its current configuration, after user feedback indicated that gaming and ultrabook-style portability don't necessarily go together so well.

Alienware has revealed the first stage of its 2012 refresh, updating the M14x, M17x and M18x gaming notebooks with new NVIDIA and AMD graphics, mSATA SSDs and caching for boosted performance, and bumping the default memory. The three notebook models keep the external aesthetic of their predecessors – think Stealth Bomber style angles and thousands upon thousands of user-selectable colored LED lighting – but inside there are big changes afoot. It's not just desktops that get NVIDIA's new Kepler 28nm GPU in the shape of the GeForce GTX 680; notebooks can also get a shot of that extra graphics grunt, courtesy of the new GT 600M family. NVIDIA's new range of laptop GPUs will debut in the Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3, with a seven-strong range of chips promising anything from 48 to 384 CUDA cores, up to 64 GB/sec memory bandwidth, and double the gaming frame-rates of last year's GT 520M-based notebooks.

Digital game distributor Valve has denied plans to create an Xbox 360 and PS3 rivaling games console or, indeed, to push its own PC reference design, claiming hardware that may have fueled such rumors are merely test boxes for its own use. "We're prepping the Steam Big Picture Mode UI and getting ready to ship that" Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi told Kotaku, going on to suggest that the company is "building boxes to test that on" but "it's a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware."
