Acer Iconia Tab W500 hands-on shows the laptop tablet that wasn’t

We've seen this device before, it having been on display early last year at Mobile World Congress 2011, but it being here at Pepcom during CES 2012 is more than a little telling for a device that was supposed to be a hit with Windows users throughout most of last year. When it comes to convertible tablets, your humble narrator's favorite device is the Transformer Prime, not least of all because it's able to fold down and be a laptop whenever you decide you want to transport it in such a way, not to mention the fact that it's got a fully functional trackpad to make it a high-class convertible in every aspect of the word - so why is it selling off the shelves while the Iconia Tab W500 remains one of the loneliest tablets in Acer's line of otherwise amazing hardware?

Acer Iconia W510 Review

Acer Iconia W510 Review

This week we're having a look at the Acer Iconia W500 series, specifically in the model tagged Iconia W510-1422 with full Windows 8 and multiple modes of computing action. This machine works as a tablet, as a notebook with its keyboard dock (in the box with this model), and with 295 degrees of twist in its hinge - a third "presentation" mode, complete with the extra battery power of the dock in-tact. This machine takes full Windows 8 to the tablet universe with a rather solid setup and a base cost of right around $750 USD - if that sounds like a deal to you, make with the tapping.

Acer’s Trinity-powered ICONIA Tab hands-on

Acer granted AMD its wish: a hybrid docking tablet running the chip company's new 2nd-gen Trinity APU that borrows the form-factor of the company's previous ICONIA Tab Android and Windows 7 models. The new Acer ICONIA Tab Windows 8 version doesn't have an official name yet - its predecessor, which ran the old OS on an AMD C-Series processor, was the W500 - but functionally doesn't leave many gaps.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 postponed until 2H 2011

Acer has confirmed that its Iconia Tab A100, the 7-inch Android tablet revealed at MWC 2011 back in February, has been postponed, and now won't reach shelves until later this year. News of the A100 issues broke when Polish site Tabletowo spotted the slate had been pulled from Acer's site, leaving only the larger A500, its Windows counterpart the W500, the dual-display Iconia Touchbook and the oversized Iconia Smart phone.

CES 2012 Tablet Round-Up

CES 2012 Tablet Round-Up

This year's Consumer Electronics Show revealed itself to be the real Ice Cream Sandwich treat for tablets in the Android sector, with one whole load of crap tablets attempting to burst the bubble of the very few high-class units that were or will be soon certified by Google. On the Windows 8 side of things, there were certainly some tablets to be seen, but certainly not to be touched - Windows 8 will be ready later this year, but Microsoft wasn't having it when it came to showing it off fully here at the convention. Then there's oddities galore like the Samsung Galaxy Note, a device we'd seen late 2011, but until now had never had a chance to peek at it on a USA carrier - it's time!
