The need-to-know on Qualcomm Snapdragon 820’s Adreno 530 graphics

Qualcomm has taken the wraps off of its latest Adreno graphics architecture, the potent GPU to be found in its next-gen Snapdragon 820. The Qualcomm Adreno 5xx series will include GPUs like the 530, intended for the Snapdragon 820, and more affordable versions like the 510, which will be headed for the upcoming Snapdragon 610/618. Rather than throwing numbers at the wall, however Qualcomm says that this time around it started with some key user experiences and worked backwards; I sat down with the company's chip execs at SIGGRAPH 2015 this week to find out more.

Mattel View-Master hands-on: Retro toy gets AR upgrade

Mattel's rebooted View-Master won't be the only Google Cardboard headset around when it hits stores this October, but it's possibly the most charming. Lenovo P50 laptop is maker’s thinnest, lightest workstation

Lenovo has introduced its new ThinkPad P series laptops at the SIGGRAPH 2015 conference. Among the new laptops is the ThinkPad P50 model, a mobile workstation that is designed to be both light and thin while retaining a large screen and the extensive features professionals require. Lenovo brags that this is the lightest and thinnest model among its mobile workstations with a full array of features. The laptop includes a 15.6 inch Ultra HD 4K display, and is a follow-up to the previous ThinkPad W541 model.

Floating displays may be the stuff of science-fiction, but one research team is looking to make them real, using a carefully tuned acoustic-potential field to create swarms of particles clustered into physical graphics. Dubbed Pixie Dust - after the Peter Pan quote - the system can cause objects up to 7g per cubic centimeter to hover in moving forms, effectively translating digital objects into real, and with a Kinect sensor thrown in they can even respond to the viewer's movements.

Striking headshot portraits that offer the same styles as famous photographers could one day be created from the sort of snaps you can take with your phone, with one computer vision research team cooking up a dynamic retouching system. The handiwork of a group led by computational photography researcher YiChang Shih, the system - dubbed "Style Transfer for Headshot Portraits" - takes a regular source picture and another showing the an example of the sort of style you're trying to achieve, blending the two automatically, and even doing the same for video.
