Samsung BD-UP5000 firmware 1.5 update promises Avatar Blu-ray support

Samsung's BD-UP5000 Blu-ray player and its problems coping with the new Avatar disc showed that not all media - or firmware - are created equal, but true to their word the company have swung into action with a firmware update.  Posted to the Samsung support site this week, all that's mentioned in the firmware release notes is that v1.5 "improves playback compatibility in some movies."

Alright, so, first there were talks of Samsung dropping a new dual format player before the end of the year. Then there were rumors that the same player wouldn’t make it out the door before next year.

Now there are rumors that its back on schedule for mid-december (next week). And, according to Dealerscope, who apparently received the word from on high (Samsung), the player is actually shipping to retailers now, and should be available by the original mid-December target date.

While LG is still sticking to support HD-DVD with combo player, Samsung has decided to abandon its second generation Dual-Format Blu-Ray and HD-DVD combo player. The BD-UP5500 was announced in CES 2008 and scheduled to release around the second-half of 2008 to replace the BD-UP-5000.
