Intel pushing SSD as hard-drive shortage hits revenues

Intel is hoping to leverage the hard-drive shortage to drive its SSD business, in the attempt to offset its slashed Q4 revenue estimates after lower than expected processor sales. The chip company warned yesterday that the Thai flooding - and an ensuing reduction in new computers being built - could knock $1bn off its next set of financial results; however, Intel CFO Stacy Smith also reckons there's an opportunity there to push another aspect of the company's business, the NYTimes reports. Dell and HP Ultrabooks by Q1 2012 tips supply chain

HP and Dell's ultrabook plans have leaked, with the two companies expected to jump into Intel's MacBook Air rivaling segment in Q4 this year and Q1 2012 respectively. What we’re getting a look at with a full hands-on demo here at IFA 2011 this week, amongst other fantastical devices from all walks of life of course, is the IdeaPad U300S, a Lenovo Ultrabook, being both ultra-small and ultra-powerful with aesthetically beautiful chassis all around. On the right side of the device you’ll find a headphone jack, USB jack, full-sized HDMI port, and power port. On the left side you’ll see one more USB port and a grille through which Intel Advanced Cooling Technology will be blowing a lot of your hot air. This system works with the side opening there, a long grille along the rear hinge, and through the keyboard itself to help avoid the “hot lap” syndrome normally associated with laptops of such awesome power as this.

Lenovo has announced a pair of new ultraportable computers with the debut of the U300 and U400 laptops at IFA 2011. The U300s Ultrabook is the Intel platform Ultrabook that has been in the news so much lately, and it is a more fully optioned machine than the normal U300. The U300s has a Core i7 processor inside that uses Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0.
