iPhone 5S “Retina 2″ and iPad maxi the latest Apple rumor-grist

Apple is thinking bigger for its next-gen iPhone and iPad models, according to rumors filtering out of Asia, with chatter of an "iPad maxi" alongside a far-higher-resolution iPhone 5S in the coming months. The rumors, which as with any iOS mutterings should be taken with the requisite pinch of salt, suggest Apple is looking to take on more directly not only the digital textbook market, but challenge big-screen Android phones with a jolt in pixel-dense resolution.

Mirasol reborn: 5.1″ phone display with near Retina MacBook resolution

Qualcomm has unexpectedly revealed a new mirasol mobile display, a 5.1-inch panel running at a whopping 2,560 x 1,440 resolution. Last we heard of mirasol, Qualcomm was dousing production plans and focusing on licensing out the low-power technology instead, having seen production issues and the dominance of E Ink undermine its market. However, this new screen - with a crazy 577ppi pixel density - suggests Qualcomm's R&D on mirasol hasn't slowed.

Apple was tipped to be updating its notebook line-up to Intel's 4th-gen Core processors by analysts back in April, and now stock checks across US retailers would seemingly confirm that the last of the existing models are being mopped up.

Asus Zenbook packing Retina-blasting 15.6-inch screen quietly goes on sale

When Apple started putting high-resolution retina displays into its line of MacBook notebook computers, it spurred a lot of competitors to begin offering high-resolution screens and notebooks for themselves. This is good news for users who prefer high-resolution screens. During CES 2013 back in January, computer maker Acer was showing off a range of prototype notebooks using very high resolution displays.

Dear Apple: Where Is My Mac Pro?

Dear Apple: Where Is My Mac Pro?

As I sat here today thinking about what I should write for my latest column here on SlashGear, I was distracted. I didn’t look at the latest news, like I usually do, and I wasn’t particularly interested in anything in particular. My mind was entirely dominated by one thought: the computer I was about to write the column on.

As I write this, I’m working on a Mac Pro that I bought several years ago. At the time, the computer was state-of-the-art and capable of handling all kinds of tasks. For me, it was a perfect solution: it offered me the flexibility to run three monitors, had the power to handle some video editing, and was running OS X – an operating system, I believe, is superior to Windows.
