The thing is,SSD wont change the landscape as their availability is ALREADY taken into account with the conditions of the shortage. Its all supply and demand. Less demand of hard drives means the price rises. As the price rises, some people choose not to buy. (I personally am one of those,I could use new drives in two of my computers, but Im am making due without them until the prices drop,or at least until I have no choice and they actually die)

Some people cannot use solid state drives as they are smaller and vastly more expensive than conventional drives. If you need 20TB of hard disk storage on your server, buying 1000 20GB solid state drives is just not going to do it. The price actually GOES UP if you buy the largest 200GB solid state drives. Your best bet is 10 2TB drives. Even at the current high prices. However, you might decide to hold off upgrading until the price goes down. In otherwords,if you see your going to run out of storage space sometime later this year, and would ordinarily upgrade right now,if money is tight, you might hold off, perhaps deleting things where you can and taking steps to make the most of the storage you have.

On the other hand, there are some for who solid state drives actually were competative. They may have chosen conventional hard drives becuase of price, but now solid state drives are a viable option as the price difference has become less. It all depends on whether your willing to pay a the same,a little more or a lot more for a SSD of a given capacity and if a small capacity drive meets your needs.

All this has already been taken into account in pricing, and in analysts predictions of the hard drive market. Unless some new technology comes along that will change the pricing of solid state drives, its going to play out pretty much like the experts say it will.

I work at a chain OfficeSupply store and our hard drives were actually put on clearance. Most of them are like half-prices. So you may be able to scoop up a few cheap hard drives that are still left in stock for a fraction on the cost.

Seagate also just announced record profit margins, due to raising prices so high. Others are doing great too. Oh well, I wont be buying a hard drive this year, I guess, as I'll never be dumb enough to pay $159 for a 1TB drive that was $58 just 4 months ago.
