The scientists studying this don't even know what they are looking at.... They are not reconstructing the videos as seen by the participant, they are seeing the images of what the videos remind the participant of. In other words: They are seeing the action of ":Comprehension" or how the brain translates what it sees into what it can relate to and understand. Just as we don't actually read each of the letters of the words as we are reading (we read by shape recognition and context) we view a video of something and compare it to images of other things we have seen before for context. Note how the video of Steve Martin has the reconstruction of him not in a uniform with a hat, but grey hair showing and in a T-shirt, as this participant may be more familiar with him, so in order for them to "Understand" it is Steve Martin, their mind's eye generates and overlays that memory pattern over the actions in the video.

That is what is really being seen here... Still very amazing, but not what the silly scientists think they are seeing.

Cool stuff! If the scientists are able to fine tune the computer model I think it will be a useful application for so many possibilities. I think the scientists need to understand more about the visual areas of the brain in order to reconstruct a clearer image. However measuring the blood flow I'm skeptical can create a clearer image. I'm not too sure if I want to be under the MRI machine for so many hours though.

I'm not sure this is as amazing as the article makes it seem. Rather than "reading the participants mind", this is more "reading the signal indirectly".

Imagine, for a moment, that we could monitor the signals traveling down the optic nerves directly -- we could equally, and intuitively, reconstruct the image the user is seeing from that source. No one would think of that as mind reading; why should think of it as mind reading when we look at the signal closer to an end-point?

It's neat, sure, but undoubtedly not what is implied by the article.
