1. Why was this panned so heavily? It most assuredly wasn’t an Oscar winner by any stretch, but it’s fiction, it’s not supposed to be 100% real. For an afternoon goof off movie, this was perfectly fine.
2. I completely agree, the chpice for the love theme…yeah, I mute the player when this is on.
3. Using the rest of this crowd’s reasoning – asteroids come in different compositions. Some are no more that big balls of rucks and dust with no real core to speak of. A popcorn f*rt could destroy them. What of the others that ARE composed of heavy metals like iron? Blasting one of our firecrackes on it would probably leave a pretty scorch mark. Putting a person on the surface to do whatever makes for good fiction, but at our level of development, rather a waste of time. It’s fun to think of things like this (I’m a professional writer, also) so reading this and the responses was quite entertaining. Thanks.

I always thought the theory was sound, the only thing I didn’t really buy is that the asteroid just split in two and went past either side of the earth.

I never thought THAT part of the movie was too far-fetched. The part I couldn’t buy was that it would be easier to train a group of reckless oil-drillers how to be astronauts, than it would be to train seasoned astronauts to drill.

I think he is referring to a solar/electromagnetic parachute, which reacts to differents kinds of energy.

In theory a giant parachute would not do anything to the asteroid untill it reaches earths atmosphere. By then it would be too late and the parachute would burn up upon entering the atmosphere.

Ironically, the third option investigated was to send up a probe and play “I don’t want to miss a thing” until the asteroid blows up on its own volition.

Didn’t other scientists already come up with a solution that involves attaching a massive parachute and/or thrusters onto the asteroid to guide it slightly out of the way of Earth?
