nice. more choices.

as i now think a very good smart phone + a very light notebook can probably be enough.

This is gonna be so boss. I was really set on the Transformer Prime for Christmas, but I'm so glad i held out. Nice device, but it's not quite a fully 2nd gen Android tablet (same old 1280 x 800 resolution, same old 1 GB of RAM, a really weak GPU, etc.). My favorite phone right now is the Galaxy Nexus (so wish I had one), and if they can come out with a tablet that's similar, I would love that.

2012 is gonna be amazing for Android tablets. First tablets that will be able to compete with the iPad.

" If there are hardware issues you go to the manufacturer (Samsung for Galaxy Nexus). For service issues you go to the provider (Verizon). Or if there are OS issues you contact google, who are notorious for pushing out fast fixes to their systems."

Yes, that's how it's supposed to work, but let's say your device isn't staying connected to the network (a very real problem with the original Nexus). How do you tell whether it's an OS issue, a hardware problem, or a service glitch?

What actually happened is that everyone involved claimed that the issues were the fault of one of the other parties, and nothing was ever really solved. Now you'd think, since Google was the one you actually purchased the device from, that they'd be responsible for finding a solution, but they apparently had no interest in providing support beyond occasional OS updates.

Even I find Eric Schmidt's statements about Tablets laughable. I like Android and chose it for phones, but Apple seem to be 18 months ahead on Tablets!

Even with ice-cream . . . success in this sector demands serious investment and a focused priority effort. Tablet users demand better key applications and iOS developers seem well ahead there.

Google need to fix both issues immediately, or pull out. For now, the real threat to Apple's Tablet dominance in this sector is Microsoft, possibly in Q4 2012 or 2013. Can you see Microsoft being a serious threat at this point?

presumably it will get direct OS updates from google like nexus phones, instead of having to wait for the OEM to skin the lates OS releases.

and keep in mind honeycomb tablets are vanilla only because google never released the honeycomb code, so OEMs couldn't do anything with it. Google has released ICS code, so expect ICS tablets to be skinned just like phones are.

I don't get it, how is this going to be any different than the current vanilla Android Tablets? I like what they do with the Nexus line keeping skins and crap off, but what are they going to do differently than say Asus with the quad-cpre vanilla ICS tablet?

Haha, yea, what a broad and uninformative statement... If you are basing this off their Nexus line of cell phones, they didn't manufacture or sell them. They simply provided specs to the manufacturer, and provided the stock operating system.

If there are hardware issues you go to the manufacturer (Samsung for Galaxy Nexus). For service issues you go to the provider (Verizon). Or if there are OS issues you contact google, who are notorious for pushing out fast fixes to their systems. Any delay in OS updates are either due to the manufacturer OR service provider.

Apple is good at supporting consumer products because they actually BUILD them. There is no telling what Google's support of a consumer product will be like because they've never had one, but based on their software support, I would have to say that it will be very good.
