I know OEMs are to blame for most of the pre-installed stuff, but still monopoly is a monopoly.

Actually, in some cases you are. If Windows is the only platform that provides some essential piece of software, then you are screwed.
Voice processing software for the paralysed people, might not be available for anything else but Windows. So they are forced to use Windows.

Of course, the actual markets in the US are all oligopolies. There really isn’t any debate to be had regarding the “monopoly area” that the large corporations are in. The real question is how they are behaving while in that position. If they are actively working to prevent their market space from becoming more competitive, they are, by definition, acting against the public interest (hence, anti-trust).

If Google were to be officially labelled as a monopoly, they would have to stop their anti-competitive practices…which would lead to reduced profits. So Google top executives will absolutely deny being in that position; it is their job to continue raking in profits at all costs.

Obviously, anyone can “use” any other product…that’s not the point. The point is they don’t. And because they don’t, that puts Google in a monopoly position. Don’t feel bad for Google, that’s a great position to be in! They just need to manage themselves properly because they are in fact in a “special” position.

Alot of OEMs offer or have offered alternative Operating systems on their computers, and offer the option to purchase it without an OS altogether. The reality is however that consumers didn’t want Linux or BSD pre installed so most OEMs discontinued offering it. And since OSX isn’t available on anything other than Apple branded hardware there is no viable alternative for the OEM but to ship with windows pre installed. I personally buy my systems without an OS but that is not going to work for the average consumer who primarily wants the computer as an appliance and without an OS it would be useless to them..

Now I want to see Microsoft getting bullied a little. I want computers to ship without pre-installed OS. How about that monopoly? Who’s doing anything about that issue? No one probably. They all got hefty bribes from MS to stfu. Some justice.

Nobody is forced to use Windows at home either. You can apply the same argument to Apple. Try getting away from Mac OS, it owns your computer! No chance unless you choose Windows. You can install a different browser on any operating system, including Windows.

Nobody is forced to use Google. Try getting away from windows, IE, it owns your computer. The average consumer has no chance unless they choose Apple.
