How low can they go? Manufacturers are battling back and forth, vying for the title of “thinnest TV”, and it looks like Samsung is intent on bringing home the gold by the time CES starts.

Samsung’s new LCD TV will measure less than 7mm thick, beating out the previous best, a Philips TV that measures 8mm thick. The difference between these thinner TVs and most LCD screens is the backlighting – Samsung’s thin display makes use of an LED backlight while most LCDs use fluorescent bulbs. There is a drawback to LED backlighting; the viewing size of the TV usually takes a hit. However, the reduced power consumption and cool factor will probably make it worth the sacrifice.
It’s very possible that Samsung will provide more details on this TV during its demonstration at CES – mainly, how much it could potentially cost and when we could expect to see it. Our team at CES will be sure to keep you in the loop.
