Samsung SSD 830 Series SATA 3 drives revealed

Samsung has outed its latest solid-state drive range, the Samsung SSD 830 series, offering up to 512GB of high-speed storage with a SATA 3.0 interface. Promising double the bandwidth of the SSD 470 series that so impressed us late last year, the new model keeps the sleek brushed-metal chassis and proprietary Samsung firmware.

Samsung isn't talking about specific data rates yet – those figures won't be released until October, the company says, when the 830 series gets its "official launch" – but the promise is a significantly faster experience than what we've seen from its SSDs before. Four versions will go on sale initially, sized from 64GB through 128GB and 256GB, and topping out at 512GB.

They'll be bundled with a 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch drive bay adapter and a USB to SATA adapter cable in the upgrade packages. No word on pricing at this stage, though given the RRP of the last-gen 256GB 470 series drive was $550 at launch, we're not expecting these new 830 series drives to be much different.
