Samsung and LG succeeds only because of their nexus (no pun intended) with the chaebols and the help of an economically closed South Korean country. If you visit south korea, you will see that everything marketed us made in Korea or nothing. A few overpriced American and European brands survive. There is severe restriction on import of items from China or Japan that directly compete with koreas own manufacturers.

It’s very difficult to do business in Korea unless you have Korean middlemen connected to the Charbols or Politicians.

Bottom line, Korean companies survived so far in a closed economy – but like Japan, eventually, the rest of the world will catch up and pass them by.

Ps. I tried to get an English language GPS from Avis at Seoul, and the folks there stared at me like I was asking for a the tooth fairy. Apparently, it doesn’t exist or it’s not offered.

I really think apple pissed off the wrong supplier. In terms of quantifiable innovation (# of patents), samsung is the #2 tech patent holder after IBM. Look at the amount of time it took for them to go back and redesign the Galaxy Tab 10.1. It took them a month… There are rumors floating around that samsung is moving over to a very aggressive product cycle to battle apple’s mobile phone division. As a consumer, this is a great news. I’m enjoying the Galaxy S2 immensely and i would have to give some credit to Apple, HTC, etc for pushing Samsung to bring out a product that just about anyone can enjoy. As a tech enthusiast, i can’t wait for all the new products in the future

Yes to high resolution for tablets (almost no limit), no to dual display phone and wrist phone (go for a credit card phone instead) driving a flat screen TV by a phone and a tablet at 1080p is both necessary and sufficient.

Samsung manufacturing parts are separate divisions, really. This is why companies like LG and Samsung struggle to come up with the large touch screens that are found in the iPad 2 even though other arms of the company make them and sold them to Apple.
