You are correct that buying someone else’s work is common and generally an accepted practise, and I think most people would support it or at least don’t mind it. MS have been doing it for years (Kinect, Office, IE etc..). There’s nothing wrong with that. What is wrong is then leading people to believe that it’s all your invention and building ambiguous patents to kill any and all competition. It seriously hurts the industry and innovation. There’s someone (slobodan udarac) in this comments section who stated confidently that Apple invented the touchscreen cell phone. How brain-washed by marketing do you have to be to believe that (as well as deluded and intellectually akin to a turnip)?
Your recipe comment is a valid one, and there have been a number of good pieces in the tech and business press about Apple being a recipe company, the point is, however, most of the ideas in the iPhone already existed in concept phones from other manufacturers before then – the only reason that Apple made a success of it is that they did more than a good tech recipe – they sold a vision/delusion about what it could do – they built a cult around it – even though they manufactured nothing and couldn’t have done it without their component suppliers (Samsung, LG, others). Their only real innovation was in marketing (as mentioned by James), and more recently litigation. Now they use their spin and marketing to cover hipocrisy (until they had to sell the iPad mini no tablet other than the iPad retina would do because it was “resolutionary”) and their business model lives on.
The better informed amoung us, rather than being a blind see what is going on (I myself used at own an iPad 2 and an iPhone 3S, but today use whatever works, irrespecitve of OS) and look at those who idolise iProducts similarly to how people today would look at people who think the earth is flat.

Regarding your second paragraph, elfyguy4FappleCEO had it right with his last sentence.

re the article – I unloaded my AAPL stock about 6 months ago and now I hope Samsung gives Apple a good kicking for what they’ve done to the tech industry in the US.

There’s a difference between “innovating” something and buying / stealing other people’s technology.

Apple bought and stole a lot of stuff in the past. They continue to do so in the present, and probably will continue the practice in the future.

Yet, these hypocrites are trying to convince the world that they “make their own stuff”. I’ve owned Apple products before the lawsuits. I’m not supporting them anymore. Apple wouldn’t have experienced such backlash if they didn’t start this ridiculous barrage of lawsuits.

It’s a good thing Apple doesn’t design cars, or else we’d all have to have rhomboid steering wheels.

Oh, and welcome to America, where I can say what I want on this board. I don’t slam them online because it’s fashionable, I do so because they deserve it. Take your condescending, sanctimonious bullshit elsewhere.

What complaints are you looking at? The Galaxy Nexus, Note, the Galaxy S3, Note 2 are all awesome and I dare Apple to say Samsung copied them. Even Samsung’s previous offerings weren’t anywhere near to copying Apple design patents(which are flat out stupid to begin with). Care to try again?

Buying someone else’s work is common. Purchasing technology is legitimate and many smaller companies invent technology in the hopes that it would be adopted and brought to market through licensing or outright purchase. If you started a restaurant, you too will be forced to buy ingredients. Point is, how iron clad is your recipe and did you copy someone else’s?

I am not taking sides, but encourage intelligence and not emotional anti Apple remarks purely because it is fashionable to slam them online. If you feel that strongly about Apple and the injustice, pick up a sign and picket their Cupertino campus or outside the Santa Clara courthouse. Uneducated, emotional “village people” remarks in the comments section won’t help your cause.

Think different ™. There are two areas where Apple has innovated a lot in:
1. Marketing (although they did build their work on previous innovations by politicians and cult leaders).
2. Corporate facepalm (they stole facetime, but global corporate facepalm at such a scale is a truly novel invention)

I was using a color touchscreen windows phone back in 05. It had a 3.5″ screen and it was a great phone with a lot of apps but windows never saw the future. I believe it was running windows mobile 05

I’m sorry to ask, but are you saying this in jest? If not then that’s the least informed comment I have ever read on SG, and there have been a few. Apple most certainly did not come up with the touchscreen cell phone. They were around for many years before the iPhone.
For added mirth, if you could please indulge me, what exactly do you think Apple invented with the iPhone?
This could make for a fascinating case study in psychology.

Supposedly the patents apple was acting like a spoiled child over and saying they aren’t able to be licensed have been licensed to HTC… Hmmmm, looks like another apple lie… just like apple innovates.

Apple’s “innovations” include facetime (they copied & got caught) swiss clock designs (copied & got caught) siri (they bought out some other company’s work), pandora’s business model, and not to mention a whole slew of copying in their early years. They’re trying to push this “we make our own stuff” b.s., and iSheep like wrksforpnuts eat it up.

Apple is pathetic. Now they want to prevent companies from using rounded rectangles, so apparently we’re going to be accidentally stabbing our children in the eye with sharp, pointy edged phones.
